Über diesen Titel

There was no single, dramatic event that set the current financial crisis off. A whole series of very questionable decisions by many people, in many places, over a period of years, built up the pressures that led to a sudden collapse of the housing market and of financial institutions that began to fall like dominoes as a result of investing in securities based on housing prices.

This book is designed to unravel the tangled threads of that story. It also attempts to determine whether what is being done to deal with the problem is more likely to make things better or worse.

"Among economists of the past thirty years, [Sowell] stands very proud indeed." ( Wall Street Journal)

This book excels in all categories. Typical for Thomas Sowell, it is extremely well written with elaborate vocabulary and sophisticated strains of thought based on a wide range of facts, history and data. Also, Sowell supports his analyses with learned citations by famous people.

I was so spellbound I held my breath every now and then.

The reader does an excellent job. His peaceful voice sounds always interesting and animating. (at 0,65 speed)
I listened to this book several times.

The book explains the reasons and origins of the housing boom which developed over more than a decade. It relates how the bursting of the bubble in 2007 - 2009 played out and analyses the further implications for the economy and society in general. In doing so, Thomas Sowell goes back in history even drawing upon the stock market crash of 1929 as well as the New Deal policies under presidents Hoover and FDR.

Rather than a mere historical work this is a case study of applied economics from which the student of economics can draw timeless lessons.

Excellent Book

I had heard and seen so many accounts of the 2008 subprime mortgage financial crisis, each with their variant of blame and explanations, but none had come close to this level of clarity, focus, and plausibility.

While many accounts have exposed the presence of the abuse of governmental and political power within these events, usually the motivations behind these actions remained obscure. Thomas Sowell not only summarizes the chain of events and exposes the immediate corruption and deception, but also convincingly explains the underlying incentives and motives.

Succinctly presented, without suger-coating for political sensitivities, with no-holds-barred analysis, and complete with excellent narration, The Housing Boom and Bust deserves a flawless rating on all accounts.
