The BBC adaptation is well structured and Paul Daneman is incredibly well cast as Bilbo. If you don't already own this, then now is the perfect time to add this wonderful radio play to your collection. (Nick Smithson)

At the beginning I was very sceptical because the Gandalf speaker is completely off, in my opinion; he doesn't get the character at all. I thought this would ruin the whole thing for me. But the rest is marvelously done! Speakers, music, sound effects - simply fantastic. Much of it must have been a significant inspiration for the Peter Jackson Tolkien movies, especially the Gollum interpretation from this production. Highly recommendable!

Superb, terrific, magnificent

Eine wundervolle Geschichte über Gier, Freundschaft und die Heldenhaftigkeit der Unschuld. Hauptperson ist der kleine Hobbit Bilbo, der weder kämpfen kann noch irgendwelche Erfahrungen mit der großen weiten Welt hat, mit seiner naiven und vorsichtigen Art jedoch trotzdem (oder gerade deswegen?) erfolgreich ein Abenteuer besteht.
Vielleicht ist der Hobbit wegen dieser tollen Identifikationsfigur für Kinder auch das Buch, das ich früher mit Abstand am öftesten gelesen habe. So habe ich mich jedenfalls schon in jungen Jahren an die englische Hörbuchversion heran gewagt und war damals richtig begeistert davon! Wer jedoch nicht so gut Englisch kann, bzw. die Geschichte noch nicht so genau kennt, wird sich an der ein oder anderen Stelle womöglich schwer tun.

CONTRA: Oft wird wild durcheinander geschrien und mehrere Akteure reden gleichzeitig (was ich ja persönlich gerade so reizvoll realistisch finde). Was mich als Kind nicht gestört hat, sich inzwischen aber als ein Manko des Hörspiels herausgestellt hat, sind die verzerrten Stimmen der Wesen von Mittelerde. Warge, Adler und Riesenspinnen zum Beispiel haben gewöhnungsbedürftige Effekte auf den Stimmen und das Gequake geht einem früher oder später auf die Nerven.

PRO: Die Charaktere, vorallem Bilbo, sind exzellent getroffen und sprechen ein herrliches Englisch - der Humor des Buches kommt hier eindeutig besser zur Geltung als im deutschen Pendant. Es wird sich noch genauer an die Vorlage gehalten und die mittelalterlich anmutende Musik erzeugt genau die richtige Stimmung.

Im Allgemeinen ist THE HOBBIT daher wirklich hörenswert und in höchstem Grade unterhaltsam! Diese Geschichte werden alle Abenteurer lieben - auch ohne jegliche Affinität zum Herrn der Ringe (ganz zu schweigen von der unsäglichen Verfilmung, die wir an dieser Stelle am Besten einfach ignorieren).

Being dramatized I thought would be more interesting. But at the end is like a theater piece with a lot of noise and voices which makes it difficult to follow. I like the normal version better. I am a huge fan of the lord of the rings. So it is nothing to do with the story

Altough I love the stories of Tolkien and have read the Lord of the Rings, the Silmarillion and the Hobiit several times, this edition of the Hobbit is really hard to listen to: too many voices and sounds, the story is hardly distinguishable between them. Maybe it is easier if your native tongue is English, but for me it didn't work and I stopped not much later in the first chapter.
