As a longtime Ashley James fan, I honestly can’t believe it took me this long to dive into one of her MM stories. I’ve had several sitting on my TBR forever, but I was hesitant. I wasn’t sure if I’d connect with the characters in the same way I usually do with her MF romances. But wow… I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The History Between Us completely took me by surprise. It’s such a beautifully emotional and deeply character-driven story that pulled me in right from the start. It’s not overly dramatic or angsty — instead, it’s heartfelt, honest, and full of quiet intensity. The way Ashley James explores love, fear, vulnerability, and acceptance felt so raw and genuine.

Colt was absolutely everything. He’s cocky, sarcastic, sexy, loyal, a shameless flirt, and never afraid to speak his mind or be himself. I loved his confidence and humor — but even more, I loved how kind and genuine he was underneath all the teasing. There’s this warmth and openness to him that made him such a magnetic character. You can’t help but love him.

William, on the other hand, is Colt’s complete opposite. Twice his age, a respected doctor, deeply rooted in his small-town community, and very aware of how people perceive him. He’s careful, composed, and very much trapped between who he is and who he thinks he’s supposed to be. Watching his internal struggle and how Colt slowly breaks through those walls was incredibly touching.

The chemistry between them? Off the charts. The forbidden, age-gap, small-town dynamic made their connection feel so intense and intimate. Every stolen glance, every quiet moment between them had me feeling everything — the hesitation, the longing, the pull that neither of them could resist. I’m a total sucker for taboo and forbidden romances, and this one hit all the right notes for me.

And can we talk about the spice? Ashley James nailed the balance perfectly. It wasn’t overdone — every scene felt meaningful, emotional, and very true to the characters’ journey. You could feel how much they wanted each other, but also how much they felt for each other.

Now, the narration — holy perfection. Teddy Hamilton and Aiden Snow were phenomenal. They brought so much emotion and depth to these characters. You could literally hear Colt’s playful charm and William’s quiet turmoil in their voices. They captured every layer, every emotion, every moment of tension so well that I was completely immersed from start to finish.

At around 4.5 hours, it’s the perfect length for a cozy weekend listen — emotional, passionate, tender, and just the right amount of steamy. By the end, I didn’t want it to be over.

If you love emotional, character-driven romances with forbidden and age-gap elements, The History Between Us is an absolute must. It’s a story about love that doesn’t care about age, appearances, or expectations — just connection, honesty, and being brave enough to choose happiness.
