Bremer dan Gorst, disgraced master swordsman, has sworn to reclaim his stolen honour on the battlefield. Obsessed with redemption and addicted to violence, he's far past caring how much blood gets spilled in the attempt. Even if it's his own.

Prince Calder isn't interested in honour, and still less in getting himself killed. All he wants is power, and he'll tell any lie, use any trick, and betray any friend to get it. Just as long as he doesn't have to fight for it himself.

Curnden Craw, the last honest man in the North, has gained nothing from a life of warfare but swollen knees and frayed nerves. He hardly even cares who wins any more, he just wants to do the right thing. But can he even tell what that is with the world burning down around him?

Over three bloody days of battle, the fate of the North will be decided. But with both sides riddled by intrigues, follies, feuds and petty jealousies, it is unlikely to be the noblest hearts, or even the strongest arms that prevail.

I liked it all in all. Better than what I expected after I read some reviews before buying. Good addition to the series. I just couldnt agree on trying to make Gaust so similar to Glokta...
(Spoiler) Shivers should have called out Dow about what happened in the room when he "took" Logans sword (iirc he didnt take it). Would have been a better reason for Shivers to turn on him.

Read and listened to these magnificent, right-going-into-your-heart-and-brain stories over and over again. Altough i am a foreign lingo consumer its just fun and joy to follow Pacey's show, that should never end. It's so good to hear, he's performing Abercrombies new words. Can't await'em.
The story seems to some folks futile, in fact it demonstrates the futility of war. Nothing gained, much more lost. Actually it is the in between. Abercrombie's narrative is not to binged on. You've to taste it, melt it in your mouth. The dialogs are ripping madness and insanity out of our world. They make me laugh, reflect and often enough sting my prefrontal cortex . Just what stories should do. I think Abercrombie is barely beatable, even if his plots are not moving the action along briskly.

Joe Abercrombie schafft es mal wieder eine düstere Stimmung zwischen Hoffnung und Verzweiflung aufzubauen. Anders als bisherige Bücher der "First Law"-Serie finden die Ereignisse hier in einem Zeitraum weniger Tage an nur einem Ort statt. Dennoch fiebert man mit den Protagonisten mit - gleich welcher Seite sie nun angehö

As all books from Abercrombie so far it was a blast and I rushed trough it because I just couldn't stop! Steven Lacey does a great job bringing to book to life with his acting skills and the story profits immensely from his vigour! For everybody who likes fantasy that is a bit on the dark side. (and nobody has plot armor!)
