Stan and Charmaine are a married couple trying to stay afloat in the midst of an economic and social collapse. Job loss has forced them to live in their car, leaving them vulnerable to roving gangs. No one is unemployed and everyone gets a comfortable, clean house to live in . . . for six months out of the year. On alternating months, residents of Consilience must leave their homes and function as inmates in the Positron prison system. Once their month of service in the prison is completed, they can return to their "civilian" homes.
At first, this doesn't seem like too much of a sacrifice to make in order to have a roof over one's head and food to eat. But when Charmaine becomes romantically involved with the man who lives in their house during the months when she and Stan are in the prison, a series of troubling events unfolds, putting Stan's life in danger. Margaret Atwood is always good for a dark dystopia. What made this one particularly uncomfortable was that it isn't really all that far from reality, and it's not a major leap to see our current society and its scientific and technological advances move towards the world described in the book. Creepy, funny, way over the top, and with a surprisingly poetic and thought-provoking ending.

Ich kann gar nicht glauben, dass Margaret Atwood das geschrieben haben soll. Die Geschichte ist flach und unglaubwürdig, die Charaktere einfältig, das Ende schier unerträglich. Eine Sektengeschichte, die so banal ist, dass es sich nicht mal lohnt, den Inhalt wiederzugeben. Zeitverschwendung. Ich hab das Buch dennoch zu Ende gehört, weil ich immer drauf gewartet habe, dass es endlich doch noch was hergibt. Vergeblich.

Typisch Atwood wird der Finger in Themen gelegt, die heutzutage mehr und mehr an Bedeutung gewinnen.

Vor dem Hintergrund einer detailliert gezeichneten Dystopie werden mögliche Gefahren und Fallstricke von geldsüchtigen Unternehmungen wie private cities oder dem amerikanischen prison industrial complex abgehandelt. Eingebettet in all dem sind kluge Beobachtungen über die menschliche Natur in Beziehungen, Sexualität, Geschlechterrollen und dem Streben nach dem amerikanischen Traum, Wohlstand, einem schönen Eigenheim und was Menschen in all diesen Kontexten zu tun bereit sind.

Wer nur "banale Sektengeschichten" und Beziehungsdramen vermutet, hat den Text nicht verstanden und leider eine ganze Ebene an Bedeutung verpasst.
Dieser Roman kann es an Relevanz mit großen Texten von Orwell aufnehmen.

Ich kann den englischen Originaltext nur empfehlen. Spannend und lehrreich. Die weibliche Sprecherin ist etwas talentierter als der männliche Sprecher, der die Kapitel aus Sicht des Ehemannes spricht. Trotzdem sind beide auf qualitativ absolut soliden Niveau.
