As she recalls her pre-revolution life in flashbacks, Offred must navigate through the terrifying landscape of torture and persecution in the present day, and between two men upon which her future hangs.

It really is written as a report and open ended.

Fans of the TV-Series will be disappointed at the lack of "action" or even "story", as this was greatly embellished on the screen.
The book is like a magnifying glass held up in front of the protagonist (not even her name is disclosed to us) and her alone: everything that "happens" is her inner world; her thoughts and ruminations on the past and the present.
In doing this, the author manages to convey the horror of a totalitarian regime better than any garish or lavish descriptions could.
This, for me, is world literature which should be read by each and every one of us.
Elisabeth Moss is the recognizable voice of the protagonist, whom she plays in the series. She does a good job, although her tone is bit too flat and monotonous for my taste and I dislike the constant use of vocal fry.
