FROM THE GLOBALLY ACCLAIMED AUTHOR OF GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRINGVenice, 1486.
Across the lagoon lies Murano. Time flows differently here – like the glass the island’s maestros spend their lives perfecting.
In secret, Orsola Rosso learns to craft glass. As a woman, she must flout convention to save her family from ruin. We follow her through hundreds of years of war and plague, tragedy and triumph, love and loss.
Skipping like a stone across the centuries, The Glassmaker is a virtuoso portrait of a woman, a family and a city that are as everlasting as glass.

Very good reading

The Glassmaker had everything going for it — Venice, Murano, slow aging, centuries of history. I expected magic, depth, atmosphere. Instead, the story drifts along like a gondola with no oar.
Ursula, who lives 500 years, has the emotional range of a tepid cup of tea. She never questions her immortality, never risks anything, never does anything. Venice — a city made of myth and salt — becomes mere backdrop. Every chance for mystery or drama is quietly abandoned.
Even the love story fizzles. Antonio could have been her great passion; instead he becomes a footnote with a symbolic dolphin.
The only strong parts are the Murano craft details and the Venetian banter — sparks in a book that needed fire.
In short: a beautiful idea that never wakes up.
The lack. Of real. Character development of the protagonist
