A hit-and-run on the gritty streets of 1940s New York City seems like a simple accident. But for Detective Wil Bartrum, the seemingly ordinary case finds him thrust into a web of espionage, FBI cover-ups, and a sinister Nazi plot that threatens the lives of countless innocents.
When an unidentified man is struck down by a taxi, Detective Bartrum is the unfortunate policeman assigned to the investigation. But when the body disappears from the morgue, leaving behind only a polished glass button, Bartrum's instincts tell him that there is more to the case than originally suspected.
And, as the detective digs deeper, he uncovers a network of mysterious glass buttons scattered across the city. Plunged into a high-stakes game of espionage and murder, each step reveals a deeper layer of danger. Now thrown into a world of wartime intrigue, doubts plague the detective as he wonders if he's the man for the job.
As the line between ally and enemy blurs, survival depends on more than just solving the case. But as Bartrum struggles to reclaim his faith in justice and himself, can he thwart the enemy's plans and save a city teetering on the brink?
