A pair of young newlyweds and their friends ride out to a gipsy encampment on a summer afternoon, looking for nothing more than an amusing fortune told for a shilling.
The old woman takes the husband’s hand and will not speak. Pressed, she gives a prophecy that empties the sunshine out of the day: she sees him with blood on his hands, and the blood is his wife’s. The couple laugh it off, as sensible people do. But the words take root, and a chain of small, ordinary coincidences begins to draw them toward the one thing neither of them could ever have intended.
Published in 1914 in Dracula’s Guest and Other Weird Stories, A Gipsy Prophecy is a tight, unsettling tale of fate and self-fulfilling dread by Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula.
Listen to the complete, unabridged audiobook of this classic Victorian horror story.
