“A startling vision of what the cycles of history predict for the future.” (USA Weekend)

William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world - and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America’s past will predict its future.

Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back 500 years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four eras - or "turnings" - that last about 20 years and that always arrive in the same order. In The Fourth Turning, the authors illustrate these cycles using a brilliant analysis of the post-World War II period.

First comes a High, a period of confident expansion as a new order takes root after the old has been swept away. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion against the now-established order. Then comes an Unraveling, an increasingly troubled era in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis - the Fourth Turning - when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. Together, the four turnings comprise history's seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth.

The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for America’s next rendezvous with destiny.

One of the best books I read in my life

Although not being an American (and the book very much focusses on American history) I could deeply identify with the ideas presented in here. Probably due to the fact that the American way of life had influenced other western nations in a significant way - at least in my lifetime.
This book is awesome, regardless whether you are an investor (like me) or just interested in cycles, generations, history and how it all might fit together. I opens your eyes for the long cycles and offers impressive reasons why "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose".
The narrator is good and following along is made easy. If I could, this book would be 10 Stars.

    Giving meaning to the chaos

W.Strauss and N.Howe manage to frame our societal chaos in a way that explains risks, rewards and reoccurance in our political struggle as part of a whole, without partisan or generational animosity.

    A book worth reading

This book has become definitely interesting within these Corona times. The time reference almost fits in considering that the huge economy crisis started at 2005-06 and the Lockdown (as a measure counteracting the spread of the Virus) was introduced in 2020.
This book proves (considering the facts) that actually we as human beings haven't moved forward or (thank God) backwards (yet).
I don't know is it just me but this book brings a glince of optimism for us reaching our maturity in times after the book was published. I certainly hope that we will see some positive things in the forthcoming years.
I know this book refers to the history of USA and the patterns mentioned are initally refering to USA but this book can and should be read all across the world.

    Personell awakening

The content of this book puts together so many pieces of history, psychology and own experiences into a mosaic. Just the fact to understand other generations and to see your own big task for the future feels like an inspiration and enlightenment!

    What’s coming and more

A great revelation. Life changing book. A must read for old and young and to be kept for the generations to come.
