Spoilers: A man once came to Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him and his mother) and asked him to share a story he heard from the Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Abu Hurayrah told him about a powerful reminder from the Prophet about sincerity. On the Day of Judgment, three people will be judged first: a brave warrior, a knowledgeable scholar, and a wealthy giver. Each one will stand before Allah, Who will ask how they used their blessings. The warrior will say he fought for Allah, the scholar will say he taught and recited the Qur’an for Allah, and the wealthy man will say he gave his riches for Allah. But Allah will reveal that they acted to gain praise from others, not to seek His pleasure. As a result, they will face severe consequences.
This story teaches us that our intentions matter most to Allah, who knows what’s truly in our hearts. This story is authentic, told to us by the most noble of the messengers, Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and was collected by Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) in his Sahih.
