This is the way the world ends...for the last time.

It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world, spewing ash that blots out the sun.

It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter.

It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester.

This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

The Broken Earth trilogy is complete - beginning with The Fifth Season, continuing in The Obelisk Gate (Winner of the 2017 Hugo Award for Best Novel) and concluding with The Stone Sky (Shortlisted for the 2018 Hugo Award for Best Novel).

Amazing novel

Amazing story, very well written. Fantastic world building and characterisation. Complex world and nuanced discussions of oppression. Jemisin deserves all the praise she's been getting and more. Reading voice is well chosen and easy to listen to.

not enough action for my taste

thr intro part was too long for me and after 3 chapters stopped listening. I also found the names used for everything in thos book hard to memorize and associate with the characters.

Great and unique worldbuilding - interesting story

Apart from the cliffhanger ending, there's not much to complain about. The world and its lore are rich and believable, the characters fleshed out and sympathetic and the narration brings it all to life beautifully.

what a waste of time

So i made it to almost the end of the book.
What a waste of time!
This whole story is no better than an instance of a fantasy computer game.
In fact i would have bet that it's based on a fantasy game if i wouldn't know better.
There are these different races living on earth just like the different races that you can choose from at the beginning of a game. And each has different abilities of course.
That's just so ordinary.
And then: A magician with ten rings has ten times more power than a magician with only one ring, being able to affect targets in much bigger of a distance and, oh how surprising that is.
Oh look, it's earth-magic, not just magic magic. How impressingly innovative.
Jemisin is actually not a bad writer, so i kept thinking, that this might in fact turn into something special.
Fail.
I will now do, what i usually do, when a book is a waste of time.
I will simply put it away, right before it ends.

Surprising, new, convincing fantasy setting

This is the story of three women, each one told in a different style. They live in a strange world where people have strange powers. It took me some time to get drawn in, but as I started to understand, I was fascinated. This is not only a fantasy story. This is also and maybe even more so a social fantasy and stands in line with f.i. the Strugatzkis' works. A strange and interesting read. The speaker does a good job, too. The book is read neither too fast nor too slow. The different personae are well distinguished. I recommend the book strongly.
