"Clarence Locke was a bore and a boar. Thursday’s cocktails had, inevitably, gone the way that their first date at Brise’s had - a disaster, as far as Antonia was concerned.

Antonia knew that it was time to throw in the towel, but try as she might, it seemed nearly impossible. More than just her nagging heart retreating to the knowledge that she was in love with a dead man, it was Clarence himself; he kept forcefully taking the lead, even when she didn’t want him too.

Still, she thought maybe she’d get used to his egotistical, self-serving, nature. But it was his social-awkwardness that truly horrified her. He would order for her without asking, and accidentally humiliate her.

With very little choice, Antonia readied herself for her Saturday night date with Clarence. It was the third date, and while she planned on breaking off their budding relationship at the end of the night (though she’d planned on that very thing for the first and second date as well), part of her wondered if the man was expecting more from her. After all, most men seemed to think there was some third date rule....

Worrying her lip, Antonia gazed into her full-length mirror, going over her wardrobe choice for the hundredth time that evening. She wanted a nice outfit, but something that wouldn’t give Clarence the wrong idea about how the night would end."
