The Early Middle Ages - the years from A.D. 650 to 1000 - were crucial to Europe's future social and political development. These 24 lectures trace a journey from Scandinavia across northern and central Europe to the farthest reaches of the Byzantine and Islamic empires, providing an exciting new look an era often simply called the "Dark Ages."
Given the period's dismal reputation and its temporal remoteness from the 21st century, you'll be surprised to learn about some of the most challenging questions historians have ever had to tackle: Why did the Roman Empire fall? Why did the ancient world give way to the medieval world? Why did Christian monotheism become the dominant religion in Europe? You'll meet some of the era's exciting figures, such as St. Augustine and Justinian, and you'll consider the extent to which the historical realities of King Arthur and Charlemagne match up to the legends that have become attached to their names. You'll also look at the era's effect on the Vikings, the rise of the Carolingians, and the golden age of Islamic rule in Spain.
Professor Daileader also explores the contrasting historical theories offered by two extremely influential historians: Edward Gibbon, the English author of the monumental The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, whose explanations closely followed those of the Roman moralists of the 4th and 5th centuries; and Henri Pirenne, the Belgian thinker who injected a newfound emphasis on social and especially economic factors into the analysis of history.
You'll see why the era belies its reputation as dark and dismal, but you'll come away with a new appreciation for this once-lost era.

Very entertaining overwiew
A lively yet informative discussion of the early middle ages, best consumed with the follow up lectureson the high and late middle ages. If there were more lectures by Prof D. , I‘d gladly listen to them.

Superb in every way
Very well performed and clear in logic and analytic. This is such a relief compared to the dull recitation of historic events of classical history.

Wir sich mit der Geschichte auseinander setzen will und Englisch gut beherrscht kommt an diesen Titeln von Great Courses nicht vorbei. Fachlich und inhaltlich hervorragend aufbereitet und präsentiert. Besser geht es nicht.

Well structured and comprehensible work
Well structured, comprehensible and enjoyable lectures. The part of the house of Islam is however not the best part of it due to some inaccurate dates. Thanks.

Much entertaining content in a very short time
The lecturer is humorous, goal-oriented and engaging. The lecture style is typically American-enthusiastic, which you either like or don't. Content-wise, this course is beyond reproach and stands up to any scrutiny by further sources or comparison with common "doctrines".
The accompanying material is helpful and structured. It will be very difficult to find another course that conveys so much content in such a short time in such an entertaining way.

Excellent overview
This is, as the name of the series implies, not a reading of a book, but a lecture. Prof. Daileader presents the history of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages from 300 to 1000 in the best Oxbridge tradition, under a clear and well-thought program, with some tongue in cheek. I especially like his concise overview about new developments in historical science.
This lecture's aim is to present an overview of the main historical developments, not to discuss every aspect in as much Detail as possible. Though it is an introduction lecture, I believe that some background about the epoche is necessary to thouroughly enjoy the lecture.

Interesting topic, great thoughts, poor speaker
I really enjoyed the topic, the way historical events are presented and the context provided for this period of time, but it was very tedious to listen to the speaker's high-pitch, staccato oral presentation. Better to read this as a printed book.
