An international business expert helps you understand and navigate cultural differences in this insightful and practical guide, perfect for both your work and personal life.
Americans precede anything negative with three nice comments; French, Dutch, Israelis, and Germans get straight to the point; Latin Americans and Asians are steeped in hierarchy; Scandinavians think the best boss is just one of the crowd. It's no surprise that when they try and talk to each other, chaos breaks out. In The Culture Map, INSEAD professor Erin Meyer is your guide through this subtle, sometimes treacherous terrain in which people from starkly different backgrounds are expected to work harmoniously together. She provides a field-tested model for decoding how cultural differences impact international business, and combines a smart analytical framework with practical, actionable advice.

They are part of a unique cultural experiment that explains how the company has transformed itself at lightning speed from a DVD mail-order service into a streaming superpower - with 125 million fervent subscribers and a market capitalisation bigger than Disney. Finally Reed Hastings, Netflix chairman and CEO, is sharing the secrets that have revolutionised the entertainment and tech industries.

What is it about the top tech product companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix, and Tesla that enables their record of consistent innovation? Most people think it's because these companies are somehow able to find and attract a level of talent that makes this innovation possible. But the real advantage these companies have is not so much who they hire, but rather how they enable their people to work together to solve hard problems and create extraordinary products.

Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn.

Being Brazilian, having lived in China, and currently working for an American company in Germany, I loved this book and fully endorse Erin’s observations. I specially like her humorous examples and her effective way to describe differences without depreciating any culture. An amazing book
The book was so well structured and the narrator was easy to listen to. Despite her voice being more on the monotone side, she did not fear to use her voice to emphasize words when needed, to change her tone to match the situation, and to pause appropriately.
Due to the book containing many foreign languages and vocabulary like Swedish, German and French the narrator clearly struggled with the proper pronunciation of certain words and sentences. She did a great job and she was still intelligible, but definitely made me chuckle from time to time.
All in all a great performance and an amazing book.
