Inhaltsangabe
Now a major BBC drama: The Strike series.
When a troubled model falls to her death from a snow-covered Mayfair balcony, it is assumed that she has committed suicide. However, her brother has his doubts, and calls in private investigator Cormoran Strike to look into the case.
Strike is a war veteran - wounded both physically and psychologically - and his life is in disarray. The case gives him a financial lifeline, but it comes at a personal cost: the more he delves into the young model's complex world, the darker things get - and the closer he gets to terrible danger....
A gripping, elegant mystery steeped in the atmosphere of London - from the hushed streets of Mayfair to the backstreet pubs of the East End to the bustle of Soho - The Cuckoo's Calling is a remarkable audiobook. Introducing Cormoran Strike, this is the acclaimed first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

Geschichte
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, she just thinks he has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realises. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published it would ruin lives - so there are a lot of people who might want to silence him.

Geschichte
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Geschichte
Into Keldale's pastoral web of old houses and older secrets comes Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton. Along with the redoubtable Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, Lynley has been sent to solve a savage murder that has stunned the peaceful countryside. For fat, unlovely Roberta Teys has been found in her best dress, an ax in her lap, seated in the old stone barn beside her father's headless corpse. Her first and last words were "I did it. And I'm not sorry".

Where is the Magic?
JK Rowling enthralled us with her wonderful Harry Potter books and it probably took a lot of courage to enter a completely different genre and write a classical who-done-it. As a first attempt, it is not too bad, but “The Cuckoo's Calling “ would never have received this level of attention, if it was not for Rowling’s name. I know, some of us are serious Rowling fans and by nature more benevolent and this probably explains the amazing number of extremely positive reviews, but in all honesty, this novel is far from great and it is definitely not a page turner.
Rowling does not really manage to create suspense or tension, the narrative is lengthy and repetitive and fails to pull you in. The reader is presented with a meandering and endless storyline. There is not much action and if there is some, it is slow paced and smothered with tedious detail. Many events are unrelated to the crime and leave the reader clueless, where this is going. This is made worse by the caginess of the main character, who keeps all his thoughts and suspicions to himself.
On the positive side, the prose is more than adequate and most of the characters are nicely drawn, even if Rowling could not resist to use some of the typical clichés e.g. private eyes have shabby offices, of course they smoke and drink and they are always short of money, but women tend to fall for them, because of their masculinity.
The story itself is not overly complex. A beautiful young model, a real celebrity, falls to her death from the balcony of her apartment. Since she had a history of psychological problems, the police assumes suicide. Regardless of that, her brother is convinced of foul play and hires private investigator Cormoran Strike to look into the case. Cormoran is quite a character, an Afghanistan veteran, who lost a leg in combat and who struggles to get his life back on track. Fortunately he has a young and smart secretary, Robin, who manages to get him out of trouble most of the time.
To sum it up, “The Cuckoo's Calling “ is a harmless, but rather lengthy crime story with enough humor and detail to make it entertaining to a certain extent. If you are a patient reader or serious Rowling fan with enough time on your hands, you might have some fun reading it.

Enjoyed the book big time!
In the beginning, Cormoran Strike got on my nerves. This type of worn down, needs a woman to take care of him, detective. But eventually I got drawn into the story with many different characters and their individual stories, different places and environments.
I deducted one star for Cormoran being annoying and one star for the voice of Evan Duffield, which didn’t do it for me.
