On the way, they pick up equally unlikely party members, with Qube breaking the world in increasingly strange ways as she seeks to be the very best companion ever.

All the while, Qube herself slowly realizes that her reality is not quite what it seems....

It's a quite charming tale, following the story of how a playtester breaks a game in all the best ways, but told from the perspective of an NPC companion who may or may not be an emergent true A.I.
The humor is a bit crass at times, but this starts and stops at humor.
Quite fun to listen to.
Also, the narrators and audio mixers did an amazing job.

We follow a completely unnamed adventurer, simply referred to as "the chosen one" for the entirety of the book. But that is not our point of view. We see the world of an as-of-yet untested video game from the perspective of an NPC companion, "Cube" who is meant to bite the dust at the end of the tutorial.

However... the aforementioned "chosen one" is a QA tester and tries to break the game as much as possible at every turn. So, naturally, he immediately tries to glitch out of buildings, steal items and glitch the NPC who is supposed to die. What follows is a surprisingly character-driven story that focuses on how cube first rationalises all the glitches and "because video game" things that happen, only to slowly become more and more skeptical about her own world. I didn't think this kind of story could stay fresh for a whole 15 hours, but it somehow manages to be good throughout.

Having three voices is appreciated. All three actors did their jobs incredibly well and it adds a lot to the experience.

Overall, I can recommend this title to anyone who enjoys a comedic take on video games. If you know "Viva La Dirt League" on Youtube, this book is basically that, but longer and with actual lore. It's also decidedly NOT a LitRPG, as stats aren't a thing from the NPC's POV.

Hilarity and Character Development

This is an interesting one to be honest i skipped most of the book but still enjoyed it. How you ask? Because the premise is brilliant, not new, but brilliantly executed. Having the NPC as the character that slowely evolves into sentience slowly fighting with everything that is happening around her is a joy, but here are the problems there are to little in terms of real progression the interactions with the game tester are interesting and really funny sometimes but there is so little of it. The book would have been way better if it had been condensed into around 5 hours with everything that is relevant.

I would recommend this book anyway but not for the adventuring or quirky conversations but for the deep dive into realization that there is something more.
I am looking forward to book 2.

The Ai part is brilliant the rest not so much...

This is genuinely funny. Love the player, the NPCs and the glitching. I'm not even finished with the book yet, but this is fun to listen to if you are a gamer... Or should I say: ...if you like exploiting game mechanics. ;)

EDIT: So I've finished part one now and I wrote my comment above early... This is a masterpiece. It is truly fun in the beginning, but it also develops into a very amazing an interesting story. Given the "DLCs" at the end I'm sure there will be a lot going on in book 2 and 3. I'm VERY eager to listen to these asap. Unfortunately as of today there isn't even a release date on book 2 on audible...

I can only recommend this to anyone who has ever played a game... or thought about what if... ... ahhh sorry can't spoil... "head explosions" etc...

Eine definitiv sehr unterhaltsame Geschichte, in der es nicht darum geht der Beste in einem Spiel zu sein sondern einfach nur Spaß zu haben und ein Spiel kaputt zu glitschen, zumindest ist das die Sicht des Spielers. Das lustige ist, dass die Geschichte aus Sicht eines NPCs erzählt wird, die versucht den merkwürdigsten Situationen einen Sinn zu geben. Die Charaktere machen über den Verlauf des Buches eine Entwicklung durch und ich bin gespannt wie sie sich weiter entwickeln werden.

Die Erzähler machen einen sehr guten Job, auch wenn durch verschiedene Effekte die Charaktere manchmal schwerer zu verstehen sind ist das mit einer der besten Umsetzungen.

Love the narrators, an the story has a unique perspective, but for the most part except some small passages the story is rather boring…the end credits where promising so I might give part 2 a chance
