Ditching the stuffy hang-ups and benighted sexual traditionalism of the past is an unambiguously positive thing. The sexual revolution has liberated us to enjoy a heady mixture of erotic freedom and personal autonomy. Right?

Wrong, argues Louise Perry in her provocative new book. Although it would be neither possible nor desirable to turn the clock back to a world of pre-60s sexual mores, she argues that the amoral libertinism and callous disenchantment of liberal feminism and our contemporary hypersexualised culture represent more loss than gain. The main winners from a world of rough sex, hook-up culture, and ubiquitous porn–where anything goes and only consent matters–are a tiny minority of high-status men, not the women forced to accommodate the excesses of male lust. While dispensing sage advice to the generations paying the price for these excesses, she makes a passionate case for a new sexual culture built around dignity, virtue, and restraint.

This counter-cultural polemic from one of the most exciting young voices in contemporary feminism should be listened to by all men and women uneasy about the mindless orthodoxies of our ultra-liberal era.

Wow, I’m so grateful for this book and hope that your conclusion that change in our sexual mores is coming is correct. As a society, we’ve become increasingly cynical and cold regarding sex, and marriage is rarely even wished by men. But I believe this is so harmful to women, particularly, as you highlighted when it comes to the amount of mothers that have to raise children alone. I feel like society has failed us. Men need to start treating women with respect again, then so much emotional pain can be avoided on both sides. This book has put everything i’ve intuitively felt about society’s views on sex and our sexualized culture into words. It’s deeply disturbing in what it relates but makes a strong case towards being more responsible in our choices for intimacy.

Wow one of the best books i have ever read. I feel so seen and deeply confronted with the pseudo woke liberal culture that I grew up with in Berlin. It has shattered me in many ways and hearing it criticized in such rigorous and rational fashion has been touching.
I realized this a a grander issue and I am not alone in my stuggles with hookup culture. This has been exactly the book I needed to end my romance with open relationships and casual sex once and for all.
