The story concept and the worldbuilding are interesting, and the global warming theme could have been a strong element. Unfortunately, it is delivered with the subtlety of trying to trick a child into eating vegetables, which makes it feel forced and heavy-handed. The setting itself is compelling, but that is not enough to save the experience.
The real problem is the characters. They make the book unbearable. You have former mage knights who are forced to go renegade. At every step they discover how corrupt and evil the empire truly is and realize that everything they were told was a lie. Yet they barely react. They keep spouting nonsense as if nothing has changed while paradoxically doing the right thing anyway. It feels inconsistent and frustrating.
Because of this I will not continue the series. His other series is great read that instead.
