May 1992, and after four LAPD officers were acquitted after the savage beating of Rodney King, Los Angeles is ablaze. As looting and burning take over the city, law and order are swept away in a tidal wave of violence. But under threat of their lives, homicide detectives like Harry Bosch are still stubbornly trying to do their job. With no effective police presence on the streets, murder just got a whole lot easier - and investigating them got a whole lot harder.
Escorted by National Guard soldiers from murder scene to murder scene, Harry and his colleagues are only able to do the bare minimum in terms of collecting evidence. And for Harry that's not enough. When he finds the body of a female journalist executed in an alley, he cannot accept that he will never be able to bring her killer to justice, and her tragedy starts to eat into his soul. But then, 20 years later, Harry finds himself working in the Open Unsolved Unit, and suddenly the past comes back to haunt him once again, in a way he could never have imagined.

He was two of the original Transformers as well as a GI Joe in the cartoon series which is still airing today, and has lent his voice to countless TV shows and motion pictures. Another good one!
The narrative and the narrator were a good match and I went through this book in 2 days. The only footnote is that the story could have continued. At the end of the book there were a few interesting questions unanswered...

Ein typischer Harry Bosch
Gleich vorweg - ich bin ein absoluter Harry Bosch-Fan. Fast alles, was Michael Connelly bisher geschrieben hat, habe ich gelesen oder als audio book genossen. Daher hat mir auch "The Black Box" recht gut gefallen. Nur mit dem Sprecher konnte ich mich nicht so recht anfreunden. Nach meinem persönlichen Geschmack ist Dick Hill die ideale Stimme für Detective Harry Bosch.

toll!
unglaublich, wie michael connelly es immer wieder schafft, eine tolle story spannend zu erzählen. er ist für mich einer der wenigen autoren, die niemals an qualität verlieren. ich freu' mich schon auf das nächste buch.
der sprecher macht seine sache auch sehr gut und passt perfekt zu harry bosch.

Decent, but there is better by Connelly
This time, Harry Bosch gets lucky - a lot. The story of "The black box" is not as Bosch-centered as others in the sense of "Harry does it all". It is rather the people around him, who, though not playing a role but being sources of information only, deliver him the clues on a plate. One can put the pieces together just as Bosch does it, which makes it a bit boring once you know what happened (not a new story). Therefore, the dramatic scenes in the end appear a bit fake and unnecessary. Besides, a couple things didn't make sense. When someone is asked about a phonecall (regarding a very important issue) he made a few years ago, it is not plausible to me that this person won't remember this ever happened and not be alarmed by the question. And a helicopter that flies into a well-lid windmill instead of fleeing in a different direction? I don't know... But I guess this could be considered a minor lapse. Also, and I had not noticed this with Connelly before, Bosch repeats himself quite a bit, especially towards the end. The constant talking about how he wants to keep the motion of the case going, how he gets into a flow, and how hard it hits him, whenever he gets at a dead end is tiring. So to me, not everything added up in "The black box", Bosch had too much luck and the other people (who were scratched to be potentially very interesting characters, Rachel's colleague for example) didn't get their fair share of attention, and I personally have a hard time standing too many reptitions of phrases/words. It is still a decent book, very well read by Michael McConnohie, but not as good as "Echo Park", "The Narrows" or "The Reversal". Oh, and beware of quite questionable behavior by Bosch. He is not an all-good guy anyway, but this time it is a bit over the top. Unthinkable that something like this would just happen and no one cared. Must be artistic license, so try not to reflect on it too much, otherwise it might ruin Bosch for you.
