    Inhaltsangabe

It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute.

The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined - every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute...and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.

It has taken me 2 weeks to suffer through this

This audiobook cannot keep up with the Hunger Games (and Catching Fire). I did not care about any of the characters. I am not sure if it is because of the weak performance - I find Fontana's voice and diction "news and documentary voice", totally unsuitable for fiction especially one with important female characters (somebody made a comment about them sounding like Mickey Mouse - I don't know what Mickey Mouse sounds like, they reminded me of Peter Griffin) and (too) many songs. The idea behind the story is quite good though.

    Good book - terrible production

I've never heard a man do female voices so badly. No woman speaks like that. Not a single line spoken by a woman carries any emotion. On top of that the audio book is split into chapters almost randomly. The second part of the book starts in the middle of a paragraph! I wish I had bought the book and not the audio book.

Mickey Mouse destroys excellent story. Too bad.

I tried very hard to listen to this audiobook. The story is excellent but I failed because all female characters have weird Mickey Mouse voices. No women/girl speaks like that. Whenever Mickey Mouse started to speak, I couldn't stop giggling. That destroyed the story for me. I need to gain some distance, and then read the book.

    New insights into Snow's motives

What did I expect of a novel whose hero is the arch nemesis of Katniss Everdeen? Well, something like that. Everytime Snow faces a decision on how to act apropriately, you hope... but you know better. The novel is a lot about inner conflicts and taking the easy way out. It echos in your brain. Definitely worth hearing.

if you like the Hunger Games ...

... you will LOVE the prequel. I don't want to spoil anything, but the narrative perspective, the plot, the characters and also the voices are superb! This books gives you insight into President Snow's mindset - before he became President. A must for fans of the Hunger Games trilogy.

    Okay but not mindblowing

The story is interesting and kept me listening. Personally I found it to have some weaknesses, particularly the behaviour of the main character in the final chapters of the book. While everything appears to have been there right from the start to me the events that unfolded seemed still a bit far fetched, which tells me that the character development lacks believability. Overall, I found myself entertained by the (maybe slightly too long) story and that's a good thing. I'd give it 3.5 stars, but since I have to choose between three or four, I'd rather go with the three. good fun!

I have serious problems with the reader though. While his tone and intonation fits the main character well, in my opinion, his intonation of women is terrible. Furthermore, for a story where songs have such an important part in, the spoken word recitation of the respective lyrics is horrible as well, lacking rhythm and gravitas. This is especially true for the hanging tree song, since there's an actual version performed in the hunger games movies.

If you're looking for smth more to read/listen in the Hunger Games universe, this prequel is interesting enough to check out. be aware that, at least to me, it comes with some flaws.

    I don't like Snow - I like Snow - Do I like Snow?

A whirlwind of emotions. I really liked this book, especially bc it gave me an insight into the adolescent mind of one of my most hated characters from the earlier (or later) mockingbird books.
I really appreciated the fact, that it wasn't just a carbon copy of the earlier books (I dare say, that Book 2 and 3 were very similar to book 1) but it gives a new angle and many more insights.

The most shocking part for me was, that my feelings toward young Snow kept changing, Suzanne Collins did very well on that account.

For me a must-listen if you liked the mockingjay-books.

I didn't mind the speaker, not amazing but I didn't hear any Mickey-Mouse-female voices other comments mentioned.

    Great Book! A must-read

Suzanne Collins outdid herself with this story. I really liked The Hunger Games so I was expecting a lot from this book. Normally though prequels or sequels to a good story are often less good than the original story. For this book though this is definitely not true. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is independently of The Hunger Games a really good book.
The only negative aspect of the audiobook is that the narrator speaks women's voices in a very weird voice and when there were songs the whole narration of them was also a bit listless. But apart from that I really liked the narrator and thought that he was a really good fit for the voice of Snow.

    Didn't regret it.

I hesitated because of all the bad reviews, especially those mentioning "Micky Mouse-Voices". Now I wonder whether those people accidentally heard the book on double speed or so. Although Santino Fontana (as much as I like him as a performer) is really not a very good reader, I can't confirm any ridiculously high pitches. If any, I thought his ambitus could've been a bit more lively. I can confirm that many characters sound shallow and flat, but - then again - they are. That's the Capitol people.
Of course you'll be a bit disenchanted after that brilliant reading of the original trilogy, but I don't regret buying it and, even less so, hearing it.

Oh, and sometimes you hear editing work, e.g. when Fontana had to read a sentence again and such - dear production company, that's not okay. It sounds like you don't care to make a bit of an effort. Good stories deserve better.
