 Rear Admiral Michelle Henke was commanding one of the ships in a force led by Honor Harrington in an all-out space battle. The odds were against the Star Kingdom forces, and they had to run. But Michelle's ship was crippled, and had to be destroyed to prevent superior Manticoran technology from falling into Havenite hands, and she and her surviving crew were taken prisoner. Much to her surprise, she was repatriated to Manticore, carrying a request for a summit conference between the leaders of the two sides which might end the war. But a condition of her return was that she gave her parole not to fight against the forces of the Republic of Haven until she had been officially exchanged for a Havenite prisoner of war, so she was given a command far away from the war's battle lines.

What she didn't realize was that she would find herself on a collision course, not with a hostile government, but with the interstellar syndicate of criminals known as Manpower. And Manpower had its own plans for eliminating Manticore as a possible threat to its lucrative slave trade, deadly plans which remain hidden in the shadows.

this part of the side story in the honor Harrington universe follows the well known and introduced character Mike hanky at the time before and after the big and important battle of At All Costs. because this battle is very signifikant in the overall story or would be to much of a spoiler to get more into the details.
it is hard to say if this book of the one of the Harrington series should be consumed first but I would settle for: listen to the Harrington first. afterwards enjoy this in depth additional information that is probably a must to really appreciate the following story. here the third power that is vaguely introduced and not really explained in the Harrington book is playing a major part.

as a disclaimer: I am writing this before I will start the next Harrington book. hence, that could contain enough information to enjoy the Harrington series without this book. nevertheless, as already experienced with the other side story books, I doubt the inside will be as exhaustive as here and as it would be best.

so enjoy this book and than h head on with the Harrington afterwards.

the book is up to David Weber's usual high standard but the change in performer from the main series was a bit jarring, especially the different pronounciations of names and the forced high pitch for women in a book with a lot of female protagonist was annoying.

I've had to review for the first time ever, because I seriously miss Allyson Johnson's voice and style. Her ability to soothe or excite at the right time cannot be replaced. No disrespect to Mr. Snyder, but these stories started with the wonderful performance of Ms. Johnson. It's not just the voice change, the story has taken on a harried tone which just reduces my enjoyment of the audio version. The strange high voices used for the women in the story fairly screech at times. Sorry, but it hurts my ears at times.😐
