#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Discover the global phenomenon that tells an unforgettable story of love, loss, courage, and healing.

“Compellingly artful . . . [a] blockbuster memoir.”—The New Yorker (Best Books of the Year)

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness—and, because he blamed the press for his mother’s death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight.

At twenty-one, he joined the British Army. The discipline gave him structure, and two combat tours made him a hero at home. But he soon felt more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and prone to crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn’t find true love.

Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple’s cinematic romance and rejoiced in their fairy-tale wedding. But from the beginning, Harry and Meghan were preyed upon by the press, subjected to waves of abuse, racism, and lies. Watching his wife suffer, their safety and mental health at risk, Harry saw no other way to prevent the tragedy of history repeating itself but to flee his mother country. Over the centuries, leaving the Royal Family was an act few had dared. The last to try, in fact, had been his mother. . . .

For the first time, Prince Harry tells his own story, chronicling his journey with raw, unflinching honesty. A landmark publication, Spare is full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

Much much better than I thought, and I had high expectations. A moving and interesting book. Takes a lot of courage to address some of the points he did. He is very good at reading, I liked the whole book.

What a surprise!

It sounds like a very honest account of a dad, husband and half orphan who had no choice about growing up in the public eye and who wants nothing more than to have a peaceful life without constantly having to look over his shoulder.
The only thing I have to criticize is that the ghostwriter put it on a bit thick at times, made it a bit too literary.

Very touching, honest account

IT WAS AMAZING!
Since 2005, more than 20 books have been written about Prince Harry.

I was not interested in any of them.

The only one who knows the truth about Harry's life is Harry himself, not the so-called experts. (For example, one book was written based on a 15-minute interview.)

Finally I heard his side. His life, his feelings and his thoughts. Like I said: AMAZING

Amazing Audiobook

Spare is a courageous, distressing and touching autobiography, beautifully told by the author himself.

And though it cannot avoid touching on conflicts within the author’s family (and thus, I imagine, break a taboo which may cause all kinds of difficulties), the main focus appears to me to be the unsettling, unimaginable, seemingly unlimited power of the media and its unscrupulous abuse
The depiction of the construction of sensationalist narratives and the frighteningly unrestricted violations of privacy of people of public interest and their friends and families is frighteningly sickening.

It is an account of shocking personal experience, of lives destroyed by a lack of protection, and it definitely needs to be heard and talked about.

More than this, however, Spare also tells a story of love, loyalty, personal growth and the extremely difficult balance of living one’s own life within a network of conflicting interests, schemes, expectations (both public and private) that seem to come with having been born into the centre of public attention.

Though the author does not (and probably simply could not) avoid mentioning family issues in order to describe his own journey, his deep love for his family members is obvious. In fact, his respect for their individual personalities, their passions and their sense of duty with regard to their work can be seen even in his grief of feeling and being abandoned, and never are they robbed of their dignity or humanity (by the author, in stark contrast to general practice by the press…).

Spare makes a particular point of not sparing the author himself in the exploration of his motives, the reliability of his accounts, his inner experiences or even private details of physical and mental health.
And though at times he might stress his heroism a bit too much for my personal liking, the author has my great respect for speaking so openly about such unspeakable trauma, about his fears and vulnerability, about slander and a level of racism that really took my breath away.

An inspiring story of not giving up, of always getting on your feet again, of fighting back on your own terms, of taking fate into your own hands in order to break free and find peace.

A voice that needs to be heard

Non surprising Information regarding the royals but the honesty of the most intimate details that could make him unlikeable made it easy to relate to, the added challenges in his life made me feel compassion towards the situation.

Suprising and relatable

Thank you for the courage and honesty!
It's so sad that the characters of others can bring so much damage into the lives of true and honest people.
No word to the role of the press!
All the best wishes for Harry and Meg and their children!

A portrait of an abject, feckless, morally bankrupt Royal Family (and its cronies) feeding chunks of each other's flesh to the snakes of the Murdoch empire in the hopes that they will be devoured last, and the corruption of the British press, which is only dignified by being called adult comic books. The problems of British society have become glaring by this time, but their roots appear to lie in the systematic debasement of the culture, cowardice of the leadership, and ostracism of anyone who shows even a trace of courage. Harry Wales has done a good job of escaping from such a toxic family, toxic press environment, and toxic nation. John Kennedy wrote "Profiles in Courage" about key moments of political courage for the common good; this could be subtitled "Profiles in Cowardice." This book should provoke moral outrage in anyone who reads or hears it.

Helps me to understand the decline of Britain
