Here is the story of two families, branches of the Solomons, transported to an alien land. Both branches eventually grow rich and powerful. But through three generations, the families never, for one moment, relinquish their hatred for each other. This novel is also the story of Australia, from its beginnings to its coming of age as a nation.©2013 Christine Courtenay (P)2014 Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Historical Fiction

Critics' reviews

"Narrator Humphrey Bower doesn't miss a nuance. His villains have a sharp, nasal nastiness, and his love scenes tickle the hairs at the nape of the neck. Bower's performance is spot-on." ( Audiofile)

Good story. And as you read in my first rezension I like the voice of H.B.
This story tells about World War I and the Battle of Gallipoli.
Very touching story.

Brilliant

I really enjoyed reading about the end of the Mary Abacus, Hannah and David Solomon generation, the development of Victoria, Ben and Joshua generation. I learned a lot about the horrors of Gallipoli and consider the callous actions of the commanding officers forcing young men to certain death reprehensible and unforgivable. What a shame to end another book killing off the main characters so thoroughly and abruptly. I was so disappointed and there could easily have been another book about these characters. I also didn’t like how Joshua turned out after being built up as a paragon of virtue. All in all, I enjoyed the book but did not like the ill fitting ending. I actually felt like the Steven King character Annie and would like to bring back Bryce and tell him to rewrite the ending bringing back these characters. I also felt the same when he let PK die in the crystal cave in Tandia.

Wonderful progression of the Solomons but abrupt end

Great book! Sometimes I could hardly bear listening to the cruelties of war, but it gave me so much more understanding of Australian history. Thank you for turning this into an audio book - super well done!
