Cal Newport's clearly written manifesto flies in the face of conventional wisdom by suggesting that it should be a person's talent and skill - and not necessarily their passion - that determines their career path.
Newport, who graduated from Dartmouth College (Phi Beta Kappa) and earned a PhD from MIT, contends that trying to find what drives us, instead of focusing on areas in which we naturally excel, is ultimately harmful and frustrating to job seekers. The title is a direct quote from comedian Steve Martin, who, when once asked why he was successful in his career, immediately replied, 'Be so good they can't ignore you', and that's the main basis for Newport's audiobook.
Skill and ability trump passion. Inspired by former Apple CEO Steve Jobs' famous Stanford University commencement speech in which Jobs urges idealistic grads to chase their dreams, Newport takes issue with that advice, claiming that not only is this advice Pollyannaish but that Jobs himself never followed his own advice.
From there Newport presents compelling scientific and contemporary case study evidence that the key to one's career success is to find out what you do well and where you have built up your 'career capital' and then to put all of your efforts in that direction.

Ein super Hörbuch!
Ich kann dieses Hörbuch nur jedem empfehlen der sich über seine Zukunft und Karriere Gedanken macht.
Das Hörbuch hat sehr viele gute Denkanstöße die anhand vieler Beispiele erklärt werden. Man kann gut folgen und der Sprecher hat eine angenehme Stimme.

True story - a lot of brain food in
Something they should tell you at school. After working for 8 years I totally agree that all this Blabla about your dreams is nonsense. Just do what you can do best and dream better things than “working in the marketing”.

Great thoughts

Helpful career advice
I've listened to this book three times now and really enjoyed it. Newport's theories on "career capital" and "working right trumps finding the right work" provide an interesting perspective on how one can find a meaningful job that allows for autonomy and fulfillment. I give it 4 stars because the book is rather short and at times, some complex topics are treated superficially. Also, the author sometimes makes strong statements when giving examples of different career paths, that he claims have followed the theories put forth in this book. In reality Newport hand picks cases to support his claims. Also, he is applying these ideas to his work life right now (he is a young professor). Would be interesting to see how this plays out. Maybe he comes with an amended second volume in the near future. Alle in all, a really interesting and helpful book.

Great book
Too much focus on one side of the medal (working good instead of seeking work you love) but important and great highlight of this rarely addressed side of career building

Great advice
It's always good to shift perspectives and this book is a great way to do that. It will clear the wishful fantasies about work and passion and brings you back on track with usable guidelines and insight. Easy listen, great advice.

it's a perfect book
only thing that bothers me is that it could have been an hour shorter.
sometimes the explanations and examples are a bit too long, but that's no big deal in a 5hour book

Zu einseitig und limitierend. Dennoch hilfreich.
Ja, Passion ist nicht alles. ohne Skill kommt man auf dem Arbeitsmarkt nicht weit. Aber echte Passion für etwas, sagen wir Musik, produziert eigentlich immer eine gewisse Form der Expertise. Durch Interesse und Freude an etwas, wird man automatisch immer besser. Der Autor steckt trotz seines hohen akademischen Grades in Schwarz-weiß Denken fest. Mit einer Sache hat er allerdings recht - Träumen alleine reicht nicht, von nichts kommt nichts. Wenn man einen erfüllenden, gut bezahlten Job will, muss Wert auf den Tisch, Wert der durch einzigartige Expertise generiert wird, eine Expertise die man langfristig nur erlangen kann wenn man intrinsische Freude an der Sache hat die man tut - Passion.
