It is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse.
And Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on holiday in the pleasant and innocent countryside, but not for him a mere body in the wardrobe. There are many, many bodies and an ancient crime more terrible than murder.
He is out of his jurisdiction, out of his depth, out of bacon sandwiches and occasionally snookered and out of his mind, but never out of guile. Where there is a crime there must be a finding, there must be a chase and there must be a punishment.
They say that in the end all sins are forgiven.
But not quite all....

It's an offer you can't refuse. Who would not wish to be the man in charge of Ankh-Morpork's Royal Mint and the bank next door? It's a job for life. But, as former con-man Moist von Lipwig is learning, the life is not necessarily for long. The Chief Cashier is almost certainly a vampire. There's something nameless in the cellar (and the cellar itself is pretty nameless), and it turns out that the Royal Mintruns at a loss.

Tiffany Aching has spent years studying with senior witches, and now she is on her own. As the witch of the Chalk, she performs the bits of witchcraft that aren't sparkly, aren't fun, don't involve any kind of wand, and that people seldom ever hear about: She does the unglamorous work of caring for the needy. But someone - or something - is igniting fear, inculcating dark thoughts and angry murmurs against witches.

A Lesson in Tolerance, served with Biting Wit
Terry Pratchett is a safe bet. 39 discworld books and his tale is still right on target, incredible entertaining and funny, but with a clear message. Intolerance, prejudices and greed make us do incredible stupid things, not only in the story, but in real life as well.
Stephen Briggs is my favorite voice of the Discworld and as always, he does a great job. He gives color and life to the different characters and it amazes me, what endless variations his voice can go trough.
Lady Sybil Vimes and Lord Vetinari (the tyrant of Ankh Morpork) manage to send Samuel Vimes, Commander of the City Watch of Ankh Morpork to a well earned vacation in the country side. Of course Samuel Vimes is abhorred by the idea itself, but his love to his dear Sybil would make him do even more stupid things. Overcoming the initial boredom, he finds out quickly that there are a lot of things very wrong in this idyllic place.
Cruel murder happened here and because the victim was a young Goblin girl, nobody seems to care. The deeper Vimes digs, the more apparent it becomes that the noble society in this area has blood on their hands. Vimes is confronted with genocide, kidnapping, smuggling and drug dealing (a drug, which makes the heads of Trolls explode), but he is not alone in this battle, he finds unexpected help.
Of course, in addition to all the crazy and frantic action, we learn a lot about marital life, the essence of the law and the raising of children. Vimes and Sybil, all the fun aside, seem to be role models in all of that.
A great story, I just loved it

Sadly not up to the rest of the Watch series
I love the other titles in the watch series, they are full of colorful and imperfect characters coping with unfavorable circumstances.
This story is different. Here, Commander Vimes, the single protagonist of the story, is equipped with two super powers, the dark and the street. With those he almost single-handedly defeats the prejudiced country people. We get to learn very little about the other characters and instead follow Vimes on his quest. There is no growth on the side of Vimes, because he is already perfect (in contrast to his younger version that struggled with alcohol and had strong reservations against other species), and there is no real conflict, because he easily overpowers every foe.
To summarize the book in one word: self-righteous. So, self-righteous in fact that it creates an award to a fictional version of itself in the story.
