In the early 80s, Gregory David Roberts, an armed robber and heroin addict, escaped from an Australian prison to India, where he lived in a Bombay slum. There, he established a free health clinic and also joined the mafia, working as a money launderer, forger and street soldier. He found time to learn Hindi and Marathi, fall in love, and spend time being worked over in an Indian jail. Then, in case anyone thought he was slacking, he acted in Bollywood and fought with the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan...
Amazingly, Roberts wrote Shantaram three times after prison guards trashed the first two versions. It's a profound tribute to his willpower...

Great story and excellent reader
Deep dive into 1980s Bombay and Indian society. Good mixture of philosophy, travel story and social drama, not to forget love story.

fesselnde Geschichte, toll gelesen
Faszinierende Geschichte, fesselnd und trotzdem auch manchmal brutal, so auch immer wieder fantasievoll, lustig und mit vielen überraschenden Wendungen. Poetisch geschrieben und sensationell gelesen, das Buch ist super und das Hörbuch großartig.

Great story performed magnificently
I wasn't so sure to start such a long book but after some friends recommended it to me I took the plunge and boy I'm happy I did. The story grabs you from the first chapter and never let's go, it made me laugh out loud, anger and cry with the author. Humphrey Bower's performance is out of this world, he gives every character life in such a unique way that you can see them, feel them and almost have them standing right there in front of you white they talk. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes adventure novels.

One of the best audio books I ever listened to
The beautiful and honest writing made me commit to the story and feel with the characters as they evolved. There was no boring part and I could go on listening for hours.

Maybe the best audiobook yet
Great mix of humor, love, betrayal, violence, philosophy. Plus a vivid observation of Mumbai slum and underground life. Probably the best audiobook I have listened to so far

Great story but sooo undynamic.
The book could have been at least 30%-40% shorter. Especially at the end, things could have been sooo much more dynamic and interesting.
Other than that, the story is great. The narrator is amazing. All in all, 4 stars seem to be reasonable for the book.

Epic saga, wonderfully narrated!
Wow what an epic saga! Like the author, Lin, an Australian heroin addict & criminal escapes from prison and finds refuge,drugs, friends and a new life in Bombay during the tumultuous 1980s. He learns the local languages, lives in the slums, helps the poorest in a clinic, falls in love, joins the mafia, fights in Afghanistan and so much more! The book is huge and there is nonstop action, interspersed with philosophical musings and interesting explanations (exactly how the currency or gold black markets work). I found I was holding my breath in some places because so much was going on and I had no idea what would happen next.
It’s not a perfect book (there have been some criticisms as to how much is fiction and how much autobiography,) and there is heaps of violence, but also love and redemption and lots of humour. Overall, it’s definitely different and transported me to a completely different time and place with characters that will remain with me forever.
A special mention to the narrator Humphrey Bower who did an outstanding job of giving each character a memorable accent and character! He was absolutely amazing

Absolutely amazing
A very powerful story skilfully presented by a really talented reader, who managed to colour each person with their unique accents!
I learned more about Mumbai from this book that a number of visits could give me!
