Desperate times....

He was only a "beginner" shaman, but Sam Verner had to find a cure to ward off the curse on his sister. Only something of great magic would do the trick. His quest took him to a mystical citadel in Australia, where, with the aid of his shadow runner friends, he recovered a strange artifact he hoped would prove helpful.

Desperate measures....

But instead of anything that even remotely resembled help, an unexpected and ancient terror was released - a terror that erupted into a shadow war for dominion over an awakened earth. And while the evil kept growing, inexorably drawing him into battle, the curse's power over his sister was also growing, bringing her closer and closer to death.

Soon, a truly desperate Sam realized that the last and only hope for saving his sister was to find the greatest shaman of the Sixth World, former leader of the Great Ghost Dance - a man who may no longer exist....

Despite its age this is still an excellent audiobook. The narrator's performance is great and the story is a classic and a must-read (must-hear) for every fan of Shadowrun.

Still an excellent (audio) book

I really enjoyed listening to the whole trilogy. Often surprising, bringing a lot feeling from the 6th World in different aspects and regions of the globe

Really good book, good trilogy

This book is equally as good if not better than the first book in the triology. Seriously, if you liked the first one you should totally give this a listen to aswell. Oh, and semi-spoiler: At the end the Narrator sings and its as beautiful as the scene demands. Did not expect that. Loved it!

Should always be named alongside "Never Deal with a Dragon"

im really struggling here to determine if this or the second book is the worst of the trilogy - they are both really bad.

So here is the short rundown: Sam sets another apocalyptic catastrophy in motion and everybody has to risk their lives to bail him out - for no or very little payment of course. In the book he repeatedly comes up with moronic plans that dont work. He then tries to fix everything with hail marys that should not work, but somehow do anyways because otherwise the story would be over. I really do not understand why Charrette constantly writes himself into corners in such a stupid fashion and then tries to fix it with different deus ex machinas.

The timeline is all over the place and the entire story is full of false tension (Sam has no time - except when the book forgets about it). Instead of logical approaches to solve problems (you know - like a former researcher would naturally be drawn to) - he decides to just go for something completely random and tries to find a guy (lets call him mcguffin), who a lot of people tried to find for many years and failed - because he has no time. But dont worry, the deus ex machinas will fix it. He doesnt know wether this person is still alive or if he is, if he would be willing and able to help him (i guess he just assumes since everybody so far is doing this for no reason). Its an absolute ridiculous hail mary. There are many more inconsistencies and plot holes - things just happen - do not ask questions, just consume product.

The story devolves into an absolute mess of shamanistic bullshit that feels more like a mind-shattering iowaska-trip than a structured story.

The only good thing about this audiobook is Tren Sparks performance as a narrator. He really tries his best to save this steaming pile of ...

In case it isnt clear already - i do not recommend this book. I really would like to have my 10 hours back. If you like shadowrun, there are much better books out there. If you have the time, play the tabletop with friends instead of this audiobook. If you dont have the time or a good group and just need something to listen to without spending money, there are a couple of good shadowrun campaigns on youtube. These provide you with fleshed-out characters, compelling storylines and runs that make sense.

Just awful
