A twisty urban romantasy featuring some crowd favourites: a strong female protagonist, an enemies-to-lovers plotline, lots of magic and adventure, and super-hot spice
Briar takes us on a journey through a fascinating urban fantasy world filled to the brim with political intrigues and magic, where the ghosts of old relationships haunt the problematic present. The Author quickly sets the scene in 2 amazing chapters without info-dumping, painting the world of the book in vivid colours (mostly shadowy and obsidian :D) with great dialogue and action.
The FMC is a magic user able to read auras, a neat trick that serves as a side hustle to help people find lost objects, etc. Her unique ability becomes greatly important when a 'Phantom' turns up murdering people of all communities.
Cue the walk-in of the dark, mysterious ex, newly turned alpha werewolf and a major player in the supernatural communities. Briar has to figure out how to deal with old feelings, fake a relationship with her infuriating Ex who left her high and dry (or is she?), and save her drug-addicted brother from their abusive mother.
A great read for fans of SJM and her searing cup of romance, this magical murder mystery has plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of heat and spice!
(I am personally not a fan of how many, and this narrator, in particular, makes most men sound like complete idiots when trying to imitate a male voice. IDK if it's the same the other way around; just something I found quite off-putting when trying to make the male LI sound appealing.)
