...is what I would say about this book if it was a dish.
I could only listened until half of it, so maybe it gets better towards the end, but I couldn't continue.
The characters weren't so bad, but both main characters were simply not interesting enough to me. I would much rather continue the book through the eyes of Olivia.
The narrator does a good job distinguishing the characters.

Regency-area-books come with the fact, that the fact that women in that time had almost no power. One has to acknowlegde that, but while the book strives to explain why the hero acts the way he does and the heroine is smarter and has more selfworth the I feared at the outset, the relationship still sometimes has abusive tendencies. These are made even worse by the narrator. For me the banter between the two and the loving thoughts of the hero are often countermanted by the always menacing, arrogant and patronazing way he speaks to her. The text says he respects her, but I couldn't hear it. If a partner spoke to a friend of mine that way, I would tell them to run for the hills.
Yet I liked that the miscariage and the two pregnancies brought topics to Julia Quinn - Books I have not seen in the 16 books I read before.

ich hab das Taschenbuch schon seit Jahren und es hat mich beim Lesen auch berührt - aber lange nicht so sehr, wie es jetzt vorgelesen zu bekommen.
Jenny Sterlin schafft es wunderbar, den verschiedenen Charakteren ihre jeweils eigenen Stimmen und Sprechstile zu geben.
Dringende Hörempfehlung!

Unfortunately the relationship in this book is abusive, many times I wished for the female MC to just leave. He doesn‘t seem to have many lovable qualities…

Writing is well, story is compelling but problematic

I must say that I do like Rosalyn Landor better as a performer but the story itself was beautiful and I enjoyed Julia Quinn’s writing just as much as usually.

Great as ever

Das Buch war ein Geschenk und so habe ich nach langer Zeit einmal wieder ein Hörbuch von Julia Quinn gehört. Klar, eine perfekte Gute-Nacht-Geschichte könnte lustiger sein und zum Schluss wird es etwas langatmig; aber die Dialoge sind gut geschrieben und ich finde es interessant, dass Julia Quinn auch mal ein ernsteres Buch geschrieben hat. Die in den anderen Rezensionen genannten Kritikpunkte treffen durchaus zu, trotzdem möchte ich 5 Sterne geben. Das Verhalten Turners entspricht den Klischees des Verhaltens von Männern des vorletzten Jahrhunderts. Das sollte niemanden verwundern, der eine „Regency“-Romanze liest oder hört. Man darf sich aber gerne darüber ärgern, dass es auch heute noch Männer gibt, die sich ähnlich benehmen.
