In Scars for Future Wars, the listener is brought inside the volatile psychology of an alcoholic in full acceleration — the rage, the impulsivity, the ruptured relationships, and the mounting damage inflicted both inward and outward. The suffering is deafening. It is a chronicle of unchecked force, where emotion and addiction merge into something dangerously unpredictable.
While moments of Delirium Tremens appear, the heart of the book lies in Jongema’s frank depiction of the unhinged momentum that controlled his life: the blackouts, the confrontations, the spirals of fury, and the relentless pressure of a mind losing its grip.
What makes this memoir exceptional is its clarity. Jongema writes with an honesty that is clinically valuable and narratively gripping—capturing the chaos without glorifying it.
