Mit “Scarlet” setzt Marissa Meyer ihre auf vier Teile angelegte Science Fiction meets Fairy Tale-Saga fort. Obwohl Cinder und ihr Storystrang fortgeführt werden, führt die Autorin mit Scarlet eine weitere Heldin ein, aus deren Sicht etwas mehr als die Hälfte des Romans geschildert werden. Scarlet ist ein echter Heißsporn. Sie stürzt sich schnell kopflos in eine Suche, die lebensgefährlich zu werden droht. Denn Scarlets Großmutter hütet ein gefährliches Geheimnis - ebenso wie Scarlets mysteriöser Weggefährte Wolf. Zu Aschenputtel (Cinder) gesellt sich also Rotkäppchen (Scarlet):
All die ikonischen Momente der Märchenvorlge sind in “Scarlet“ vorhanden, wenn auch teils in stark verfremdeter Form: Scarlets Reise durch den Wald abseits des Weges; das Aufeinandertreffen von Wolf und Jäger (clever gelungen: Hunter ist der Name eines anderen Straßenkämpfers, mit dem Wolf sich anlegt) sowie die Szene, in der Rotkäppchen glaubt, ihre Großmutter vor sich zu haben, aber durch einen Verräter getäuscht wird - all diese Momente spielen auch eine Rolle. Vor allem die letztgenannte Szene, die im Märchen bei genauerem Nachdenken Fragen aufwirft – wie kann die Enkelin den Wolf im Schafspelz nicht erkennen?! – ist hier wunderbar und absolut glaubhaft gelöst.
So rund die Geschichte um Scarlet aber auch gelungen ist, so kann sie dennoch nicht mit der Geschichte um Cinder und Caswell mithalten. Ihre Flucht aus dem Gefängnis und mit Caswells Raumschiff ist um einiges spritziger und spannender als die Passagen um Scarlet und Wolf.Erst, als der Leser im letzten Drittel des Romans erfährt, wie Scarlets und Cinders Schicksale miteinander verwoben sind, wird es auch in Scarlets Strang wesentlich interessanter …
Sehr gelungen gerät allerdings in beiden Handlungsbögen die Leistung der Hörbuch-Sprecherin Rebecca Soler: Sie trifft sowohl die sarkastische/zynische Art Cinders als auch den Ton der hitzköpfigen Scarlet und überzeugt nicht nur in humorvollen, sondern auch in emotionalen Momenten. Eine klasse Leistung. Die elfeinhalb Stunden Hörbuch machen Spaß!
Trotz einiger kleiner Schwachpunkte ist “Scarlet” eine sehr gelungene Fortsetzung von “Cinder“, die viel Lust macht auf “Cress”, den dritten Teil der Reihe, der für 2014 angekündigt ist.

It was great getting to know Scarlet and her story. Her grandmother and of course - Wolf.
It took me only one day to listen to this. The writing style is so captivating, the story really fascinating.
I think the author did a great job writing both storylines - Cinder’s and Scarlet’s - and bringing them together towards the end.
