Über diesen Titel

Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Novel, Ringworld remains a favorite among science fiction readers and listeners.

The artifact is a vast circular ribbon of matter, some 180 million miles across, with a sun at its center. Pierson’s puppeteers—strange, three-legged, two-headed aliens—discovered this “Ringworld” in a hitherto unexplored part of the galaxy. Curious about the immense structure, but frightened by the prospect of meeting the builders, they set about assembling a team to explore it:

Louis Wu, human—old and bored with having lived too fully for too many years, seeking an adventure, and all too capable of handling it.

Nessus, puppeteer—a trembling coward from a species with an inbuilt survival pattern of nonviolence. This particular puppeteer, however, is insane.

Speaker-to-Animals, kzin—large, orange-furred, and carnivorous. The kzin are one of the most savage life-forms known.

The party’s expedition, however, goes disastrously wrong when their ship crash-lands and its motley crew faces a daunting trek across thousands of miles of Ringworld territory.

Beschreibung von Audible

I had a chance to listen to this story on a long road trip. Larry Niven populates his universe with a plethora of strange and exotic creatures that are well developed. The basic story is well written and is about a world that is a ring around a star (with over 1,000,000 times the land area of Earth). This novel is one that you cannot stop listening to. The hours on the road just flew by as I became engrossed in the cool story. You will want to listen to more of Niven's novels that take place in the Ringworld universe. (Matt S.)

See title. And don't get me startet on the way women are written in this book. All the alien races of which the female gender is mentioned have a "non sentient female gender purely for reproduction". The 2 women characters are both dumb, naive, have no autonomy and are constantly having sex with the protagonist (the human protagonist is 200 years old, and his human partner is 20....).

The world is really interesting. I like the universe this plays in but the way women are written is not even excusable by the period the book was written in. This isn't my first book from the 70s. This is just a rather extreme case.

Still if you can overlook the fact that the characters are clichés and the women are written painfully dumb then an interesting universe awaits you! I wouldn't want to have missed it but I still kinda regret giving the author money.

Interesting world, bland characters.

I would like to write ‚aged like milk‘ but some of the ideas in that book were problematic in the 70s already. Furthermore, it’s really heavy handed sci-fi, introducing traits and items just to push the implausible plot. Making bad writing a plot point, doesn’t make the story any better (more details would be a major spoiler). Character traits get introduced and then never used again or even refuted so they better fit the plot while there is almost no character development. And the only exception to this is only reported and commented on by another character. The old rule „show, don’t tell“ applies to books too.
The book has a few interesting ideas but the writing is quite bad. Lucky Dennis E. Taylor has a better version of the core setup in his Bobivers series.

Heavy handed like the fist of god

This is by far the worst book I have had the misfortune to buy. The story is boring. The dialogs are contrived. The characters are superficial. The message of the book seems to be that women are ridiculous barely human creatures that survive on luck or by having sex with a strong man who can then lead them. It is strongly implied that the universe would be better off if all females were non-sentient. Even if that is your kink, the sex is so uninspired that we have to assume Niven had never actually had sex before writing this (which probably explains his obvious hatred of women). I am embarrassed that I spent money on Ringworld and I am stupider for having listened to it.

The absolute worst

Einfach sad.

Liebe die Geschichte, Sprecher aber nicht
