Amazing Book

When I heard from this book on the Rooster teeth Podcast I thought it would be a fun book to read as a joke. But I didn't expect the rollercoaster of emotions which make this book so much greater. I realy recommend this book to anyone which love a sci-fi novel which doesn't take itself to serious.

Nice little story

enjoyable, well-crafted, fun narration.
True, the "X said" is noticeable, but it fades out eventually.

Interesting book

This book was not what I expected. I almost gave up given the quite atrocious writing and storyline in the first part. Buy do fend through it, that's what it has to be like! Will Wheaton does an ok job, a bit flat for my liking

Avoiding the Narrative

At first things are not going well for the junior officers of the UUS Intrepid: they are trapped in a mad universe and programed to die as redshirts on away missions (being a ”Star Trek” insider is an essential perquisite to understand anything at all). The only advise they get is “Avoid the narrative!” something the author does too - hence a few hours of nothing but dialogs. The protagonist and the listener are on the verge of being completely annoyed and quitting, but then things change…

The story really takes of as soon as the redshirts take their fate into their own hand and the result is just great. John Scalzi tops it by adding three codas and thereby giving it an emotional depth one would not have expected at first. Add to that Wil Wheaton as narrator – after all Wesely Crusher was a redshirt too…

It's not a book about Star Trek, but there are many references that are certainly funnier for people who are familiar with the series.

Amüsante SciFi-Geschichte und toller Sprecher

Ich finde den Sprecher (im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Rezensenten) super angenehm und das "he said" ist mir überhaupt nicht als störend aufgefallen. Die eigentliche Story ist eigentlich nach 2/3 durch und dann kommen Nachbrenner aus verschiedenen Perspektiven, die ich teilweise als etwas langatmig empfand, Der Happy-End-Schluss ist dann wieder kitschig-schön

Good book, but...

Its a good book but:
Wheaton is only a mediocre voice actor and i almost lost my mind 'cause every dialog is annoyingly full of he saids and she saids.
Are you aware of the fact, that a voice actor can show who is saying what by actual voice acting?

Gets even better towards the end

In tue beginning there is an annoying part, where the actors are named every time.

Too much of Wil, perfect Story by John

The only thing I like about Wil is his youtube channel about tabletop games. Placing him, a Star Trek Actor, to read a book that, in general, is a Star Trek spin-off, is not much more than a merchandising trick. Yes, there are Star Trek Actors (or the more - voices) that do an awesome job reading books, but Wil is not such one. The whole book is read with the same pitch, its difficult to separate characters from each other, and sometimes he seems to find more joy in hearing his own voice goind down down down than to adjust to the currenct situation the story is in. Theres more to a story teller than having a deep voice.

That set apart - a story about the red shirts of star trek is quite funny! There are so many ideas on how to exploit being a red shirt, so many implications... its simply funny to listen! Mr Scalzi, once more, good stuff of an old man ;) thank you for funny 7 hours.

A good story doesn't equal a good author

I have yet to finish the book, but so far the story is rather amusing.

The concept is nice and something new, but the writing style is atrocious.
Not sure if it would be as noticeable in book form but when it is read it is garing.

The worst part so far has been when two of the main characters talk early on

x said....y said.....x said.....y said....x said....y said. Very rarely is there any differentiation from this pattern.
Had the narrator been able to adapt his voice enough to differentiate between characters (which I'm sure he could have) and had he been allowed to leave out all the superflous "x said y said" I would be able to talk more indepth about smaller traits of the book.

Overall this would make for a nice audioplay instead of a audiobook. Or a movie/black mirror episode
