Ten years ago, the renegade demigod known as the Kinslayer returned. His armies of monsters issued from the pits of the earth, spearheaded by his brutal Yorughan soldiers. He won every battle, leaving burnt earth and corruption behind. Thrones toppled and cities fell as he drove all before him.

And then he died.

A handful of lucky heroes and some traitors amongst his own, and the great Kinslayer was no more. Celestaine was one such hero and now she has tasked herself to correct the worst excesses of the Kinslayer and bring light back to her torn-up world. With two Yorughan companions she faces fanatics, war criminals, and the monsters and minions the Kinslayer left behind as the fragile alliances of the war break down into feuding, greed, and mistrust.

The Kinslayer may be gone, but he cast a long shadow she may never truly escape.

Critics' reviews

“Great pace, compelling characters, some serious ethical arguments to make, and amazing action scenes. And it’s startlingly fun.” (Tor.com)

This is another spin on the classic fantasy tropes, higlighting the weirdness and logical incongruenties of a world sinmilar to middle earth or forgotten realms. The story begins at the end of the other classsic fantasy storys, the defeat of the evil overlord. And it was not really a heroic deed per se but grim treacherous and gritty buisness. But what of the heroine now? How to heal the world of the former devestating war. What of the former minions of the evil lord? Commit genocide or integrate them into a broken society which is bereft of compassion, trust and even their gods.
The story has some good ideas and funny moments. For Example the weird magic sword which cuts through everything, even its scabbard and causes its wielder all sorts of logistical problems etc.
It has some action, some wierd worldbuilding and it dosn't take itself very serious but it didn't work that well for me.
Spiderlight by the same author was better, Kings of the wyld by Nicholas Eames has its own, another twist on the classic fantasy.
The narrator was ok but not that great and sometimes not so easy to follow. More pacing and emotion would be better.
Hard to tell if this series does become better but there is potential upwards knowing other titles of the author.

The evil overlord is dead, what of the heroes now?
