John Punter, professional gambler and amateur private investigator, has seen his fair share of crime and shady dealings, both on the race track and off it. So when the daughter of a bookmaker friend is abducted, following hot on the heels of a gruesome murder after an abduction-gone-wrong, Punter's offer of help is gladly accepted. But then, just when everything seems to be going right, a local trainer hits a run of unusual bad luck and a young jockey dies under suspicious circumstances. With the help of a journalist friend, Kate, Punter begins to put the pieces together, and finds himself drawn into a tangled web of underworld crimes that are much more sinister than he had anticipated...©2009 Peter Klein. Beskrivning från Audible

Peter Klein creates a fascinating thriller set amid the world of Australian horse racing. When the daughter of his bookie friend is kidnapped, the aptly named professional gambler and amateur detective John Punter offers his help in finding her. But as John gets deeper into his investigation, the circumstances of his environment grow dark and dangerous, threatening his life as well as the people in the horse racing community. David Tredinnick's gregarious accent has a deep timbre that gives John Punter a robust charm, turning him into a generous and good-hearted everyman who is easy to root for.

Kritikerröster

"We may have found Australia's Dick Francis...Klein writes with a rare passion and knowledge about the turf...For all crime mystery readers." (Breeding and Racing)
"An exceptional novel: it is fast moving, exciting and holds the reader in its grip until the end. Clearly, Peter Klein is Australia's answer to Dick Francis." (Rob Waterhouse)
"David Tredinnick's performance is all wisecracks and attitude as he creates the Australian character of John Punter. Punter (PUNTER'S LUCK), one-time jockey hopeful, is a professional gambler, sometimes investigator, and general good guy. When bookie Big Oakie White's daughter is snatched by kidnappers, he calls Punter to find her. Further misfortunes plague track denizens: A trainer experiences an unusual string of bad luck, a jockey is killed under suspicious circumstances, and Punter finds his own life in jeopardy as he's drawn deeper into the investigation. Peter Klein reflects a keen eye for detail and a precise ear for dialogue. Tredinnick's Aussie accent is a perfect fit for the colorful characters Punter encounters in the world of Melbourne horse racing." (AudioFile Magazine)
