My German Review:
Ich bin ein großer Jane Austen-Fan weshalb mich die Prämisse (Jane Austen-Professorin löst Mordfälle) angezogen hat. Die Autorin hat dieses Buch auf jeden Fall für Fans geschrieben, da sie nicht jedes Zitat erklärt und den Kontext für sich sprechen lässt.
Der Mordfall an sich ich typisch britisch, allerdings spielt das Ganze im Staate Virginia, USA, was man nicht wirklich vermittelt bekommt, da alles doch sehr britisch daherkommt. Aber spätestens, wenn man Begriffe wie Dollar, 911 und CSI hört, weiß man, in welchem Land man sich befindet.
Die Hauptfigur, Professor Phaedra Brighton, ist sympathisch und exzentrisch ohne unrealistisch zu wirken.

Allerdings gibt es drei große Kritikpunkte (die hoffentlich in den Fortsetzungen ausgebügelt werden):
1. Die Tatsache, dass Professor Brighton Jane Austen-Expertin ist, hat für den Kriminalfall überhaupt keine Auswirkungen. Es gibt ihr weder einen Vorteil, noch hilft es ihr, den Mörder zu entlarven. Man hätte hier vielleicht die Verdächtigen in Professor Brightons Verstand mit Austen-Charakteren gleichsetzen können a’la „Er benimmt sich wie Wickham in Stolz und Vorurteil“ der „Das ist ein Mr. Crawford, wenn du mich fragst“.
2. Man kann nicht wirklich mitraten, da bestimmte Infos erst zum Schluss hin mitgeteilt werden.
3. Es ergibt praktisch keinen Sinn, dass Professor Brighton in dem Fall ermittelt. Ja, ihre Freundin gerät in Verdacht, aber außer der Tatsache, dass ihr Vater Strafverteidiger war und sie gerne Krimis liest ist die Motivation eher schwach. Zudem benimmt sie sich einfach unrealistisch was die Weitergabe von Informationen angeht. Alles muss ihr im Nachhinein vom ermittelnden Detective aus der Nase gezogen werden und immer wieder wird sie ermahnt, sich nicht einzumischen – was sie einfach ignoriert. Das Problem ist, dass die Polizei nicht mal ansatzweise dilettantisch dargestellt wird, dennoch traut sie der Polizei nicht zu, den wahren Mörder zu finden – denn natürlich muss ihre Freundin (trotzt aller Beweise) unschuldig sein.

Ich werde mir dennoch das 2. Buch holen.

My English review:
A good start with much room for improvement... I'm a huge Jane Austen fan so the premise (Jane Austen scholar solves murders) drew me in. The author definitely wrote this book for fans as she doesn't explain every quote and let the context speak for itself.
The murder case itself is typically British, but the whole thing takes place in the state of Virginia, USA, which you don't really get across, since everything is very British. But at the latest when you hear terms like dollars, 911 and CSI, you know which country you are in.
The main character, Professor Phaedra Brighton, is personable and eccentric without being unrealistic.

However, there are three major criticisms (which I hope will be ironed out in the sequels):
1. The fact that Professor Brighton is a Jane Austen expert has no bearing whatsoever on the criminal case. It doesn't give her an advantage, nor does it help her unmask the killer. One could perhaps have equated the suspects in Professor Brighton's mind with Austen characters a'la 'He acts like Wickham in Pride and Prejudice' or 'That's a Mr Crawford if you ask me'.
2. You can't really guess the killer because certain information is only given at the end.
3. It makes almost no sense for Professor Brighton to investigate the case. Yes, her friend is under suspicion, but apart from the fact that her father was a criminal defense attorney and she likes to read mysteries, the motivation is rather weak. In addition, she behaves simply unrealistic when it comes to passing on information. Everything has to be pulled out of her afterwards by the investigating detective and she is repeatedly warned not to interfere - which she simply ignores. The problem is that the police aren't portrayed as amateurish in the slightest, yet she doesn't trust the police to find the real killer - because of course her friend (despite all the evidence) has to be innocent.

I will still get the 2nd book though.
