My name is Alice Long, and I've always known I was different.

When I was little I used to climb up to the highest branches of the housetree at night, and watch the starships docking at the orbital stations high above. Forty meters off the ground, watching ships 30,000 kilometers overhead, with senses that could pick out radar pings and comm chatter as easily as the ships themselves. It all seemed perfectly natural at the time.

There were other kids with mods at the orphanage, but nothing like that. I learned fast to downplay my abilities, keep my mouth shut, and try to blend in. Even as a kid I knew not to trust the Matrons. What would they do if they realized the Adjustments that were supposed to make me a meek little herd animal didn't do anything?

Then I messed up and gave myself away.

Now I'm on the run, hoping against hope that the Matrons won't try too hard to find me. Hoping to survive all the awful things that can happen to a girl on her own in space. Kidnappers, slavers, pirates, and yakuza - no matter where I go, trouble always seems to find me.

Good thing I'm not as helpless as I look.

Hat Ihnen Mare Trevathan an der Geschichte etwas vermittelt, was Sie vielleicht beim Selberlesen gar nicht bemerkt hätten?

Die Leserin füllt die Geschichte mit Leben. Die Charaktere haben alle eine einzigartige und wiedererkennbare Stimme ohne das damit übertrieben wird.

Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?

Als Anime in Buch form wird Perilous Waif oft beschrieben. Die action gepackte Geschichte mit einer Kampfmaschine in Mädchenform, Horden von Tiermädchen und over the top Kampfszenen kommt einem typischen Anime in vielen Hinsichten auch nahe. Am besten eignet sich diesen Buch für jemanden der leichte Unterhaltung mit einem Touch Gesellschaftskritik und AI Philosophie in einem gut durchdachten SF Universum sucht.

If you are searching for your new sifi audio book look no further, you found a really really good sifi story.
This story had everything I hoped to find in a sifi novel and more, and the best part, there will be more of this series.
The world is complex, makes sense and is fun:

To give you a good introduction to this sifi universe start with the end of the book, Chapter 33-37 (appendix 1-5)
There everything about the world/universe will be explained. NO SPOILERS OF COURSE, just Information (this really should have been at the beginning of the book).
Space travel, AI, Humanity, Technology, Medicine.

Good voice acting and strong (hard) scifi elements. The authors notes at the end are a treat and really show that they put in a lot of thought in to the universe. There weren't any outright annoying or unlikable characters, only the amount of body augmentation towards more animal like features isn't really my cup of tea and hard to believe that much of humanity would go for that.

All in all I'd pick up a sequel should there be one.

It's quite amazing how Mare Travethan can give each character a voice that just fits perfectly! There's meek Naoko (remember the attacking BUSH MONSTER?? =D), there's Alice's "French" android bodyguard Emla, there's rough-and-tough security chief Jim West... Mrs. Travethan just HAS TO return for the sequel!! =)

Incredible voice actress/narrator

Hat mir echt gut gefallen.
Charaktere sind sympathisch und die Geschichte fließt immer gut dahin aber durch die Sprecherin
Ist es als wenn man dabei ist die Aussprache und Stimmlage der unterschiedlichen personen ist großartig.

Die Waise Alice ist von ihren Eltern mit überragenden (genetischen) Talenten ausgestattet worden und flieht von Überhippiewelt, die sie aufgezogen hat, in ein Universum, dass eine überraschend plausible Weltraumoper darbietet. Der Roman hat Schwächen, was sich vor allem in der Art zeigt, wie alles nach Alice Pfeife tanzt und Probleme durch ihre noch unbekannte Mutter in Deus Ex Machina Manier löst oder beseitigt.

Die Sprecherin Mare Trevathan wurde gut gewählt und bringt den jugendlichen Charakter von Alice gut zur Geltung.

Mentally 6 year old in the body of a 13 year old girl is constantly horny for everyone (ew) and never struggles longer than 2 minutes because of deus ex machina android parts that just spontaneously grow in her brain or whatever. Boring, creepy (weeb men writing women), mentally enslaved underage furry girls everywhere. AVOID.
