It's almost Christmas, and Emery Hazard finds himself face to face with his own personal nightmare: going on a double date with his partner - and boyhood crush - John-Henry Somerset. Hazard brings his boyfriend; Somers brings his estranged wife. Things aren't going to end well.

When a strange call interrupts dinner, however, Hazard and his partner become witnesses to a shooting. The victims: Somers' father and the daughter of a high school friend. The crime is inexplicable. There is no apparent motive, no connection between the victims, and no explanation for how the shooter reached his targets.

Determined to get answers, Hazard and Somers move forward with their investigation in spite of mounting pressure to stop. This series really grows on me - not that the characters are easy to like - they are complex and wrestle with a complicated past. But the way the manage the minefield of their past to solve crimes in the present is exciting. I just wish they would finally talk to each other - rather than these lengthy internal dialogues! But the crime plots rocks - and this one is no exception. Whenever I thought I have solved it - the story takes an unexpected turn. I had a blast - looking forward to the next entry of that series.

please come to terms and don't drag it out so much. I'm totally in for the sliw burn and 5-book-series, but does it really have to be all this sidelong stream of consciousness? After a while I found myself skipping minutes just to get on with the story instead of listening to all this self-loathingand overthinking (not to misunderstand - that'sall ok, but please taje it a little bit shorter).
What I didn't get though: Why is Somers still thinking that Ree doesn't want to take things further? At Windsor Ree would have gone further if it wasn't for Somerer drewing back. And the next morning in the snow Ree told him exactly how he had felt for him for 20 f* years and that Somers had to choose. So what is there not to understand, even if H. then didn't want to "accept" this decision the following night when J was completely drunken and come undone.
Maybe S isn't able or willing to really listen when important things are laid out.
All in all: I love this series, but about 100 pages less would have done a lot better.

Love these two guys and the mystery but

sorry everyone, this series is my new obsession for the next months. this book had everything I loved from book 1, featured in aspects of book 2 and still surpassed all the ones before. I am goddamned in love with the main characters and the portrayal of all their relationships and how each side character is fleshed out and alive.
