Inhaltsangabe

The launch of a new science-fiction adventure series - by the New York Times best-selling author of the Safehold series and the Honor Harrington series.

The Galactic Hegemony has been around a long time, and it likes stability - the kind of stability that member species like the aggressive, carnivorous Shongairi tend to disturb. So when the Hegemony Survey Force encountered a world whose so-called "sentients" - "humans", they called themselves - were almost as bad as the Shongairi themselves, it seemed reasonable to use the Shongairi to neutralize them before they could become a second threat to galactic peace. And if the Shongairi took a few knocks in the process, all the better.

Now, Earth is conquered. The Shongairi have arrived in force, and humanity’s cities lie in radioactive ruins. In mere minutes, more than half the human race has died.

Master Sergeant Stephen Buchevsky, who thought he was being rotated home from his latest tour in Afghanistan, finds himself instead prowling the back country of the Balkans, dodging alien patrols and trying to organize scattered survivors without getting killed. And in the Southeastern US, firearms instructor and former Marine Dave Dvorak finds himself at the center of a growing network of resistance - putting his extended family at lethal risk, but what else can you do?

On the face of it, Buchevsky's and Dvorak's chances look bleak, as do prospects for the rest of the surviving human race. But it may well be that Shongairi and the Hegemony alike have underestimated the inhabitants of that strange planet called Earth...in David Weber's Out of the Dark

Kritikerstimmen

"Weber pulls off this conceit in audacious style with a focus on military-powered action that will thrill fans of his Honor Harrington series, and he keeps the pedal to the metal right up to the almost unbelievable conclusion." ( Publishers Weekly)

The title should be "Out of the Blue"...

This is typical Weber stuff.
Much filler. So much filler. even characters in the book get annoyed by other characters for yapping on and on before coming to the point. (this is funny once, but not constantly, Mr Weber)

The reason I'm bothering to write this review is the last 50 pages (or so).
You *will not be prepared for what happens* at the end of the story.

Currently I'm stuck between:
1) wow, this is a novel approach! very modern!
and
2) wow, this is complete nonsense, did he have a stroke when writing this, or let his phones autocomplete finish the book?

Do buy this if:
- you are a Weber fan
- you like to listen to audiobooks and the book itself is not that important, it's just background noise
- you are a sucker for plot twists. (any more twist in the plot would have a high probability of injuring anyone listening to it)
- you are a massive <can't write what, because that would be spoiler> fan.

Do not buy this if:
- you cannot afford to throw 10$/€ away.
- are someone who considers themselves "a logical person"
- don't have much patience. (this book should be 6 hours at most, instead of 16.)

From sci fi to sci bad

The story started out so good with plenty of Action potential.... writing was excellent plenty of Action all with in normal growth, you can easily be emersed in the story have empathy with the characters understand there Actions etc.... the limitations of the Invasion forces and there false assumptions about humans all well though out and explained within the Story. Pacing was good etc.

Then what the ? The ending is defenantly not what I expected there where so many potential endings without going down the supernatural route ! totally ruined it for me. Just didnt fit with the first 2/3 of the book.

Worst Weber book I’ve read

No real overall plot and huge (and pretty bad) deus ex machina plot device at the end.

Avoid!
