Right from the start I was confused by the fact how self-centered, clueless and careless Elsbeth is, This did not improve any throughout the stiry since her co-conspirators are pretty much just as bad. Given that not only their lives but their entire families are endangered this just seems really idiotic. I liked the reader and the magic system and the story could have been good.

I loved this story so much! A dark, gothic, romantic fantasy with some spice. 🌶️😍
Amazing audiobook. It gives you the perfect atmosphere nad vibes for the story. The romance is really good. There is a little steamy scene but nothing explicit.
Great characters, cool magic system and kind of quest to collect all of the magical cards. I love it.
Can't wait for the sequel.

Ich bin jetzt ungefähr bei der Hälfte des Buches angekommen und überlege ob ich es bis zum Ende schaffe! Die Charaktere sind kaum auszuhalten und bei der Handlung schlafen mir fast die Füße ein!

Too long for telling almost nothing & ending unnecessarily on a cliffhanger right as it was beginning to get exciting.
There's one good love scene toward the end. Otherwise, the story, the characters, the setting/world-building, etc. all are flat, bland, cliche, and full of tired tropes.

The narrator did a great job, but the first book of this duology was unfortunately not good at all. First of all, I would like to say that the author made an effort with the magic system. She probably wanted to create something completely new and she did. But this plot is boring. Almost nothing happens and the story is tedious. The characters in particular are colorless. You can't build up a relationship with them. I didn't really care about the fate of the characters while reading. That's why the cliffhanger didn't catch me. Sometimes the author tried to write in a very old-fashioned way, but then again she used words when swearing that didn't fit. It didn't seem coherent. These rhymes also seemed forced and were just annoying. In the end I just thought, let the poor woman (Elspeth) eat something at least once. She didn't touch a forkful of her food for the entire book. She should have starved by now.
