Conscription and death. That is the sword of Damocles hanging over every peasant's head. As the realm gets overrun by bloodthirsty Beasts, every family has to pitch in.

And so, to spare his father and siblings, Ferren offers to be the one from their household to join the king's army.

But during an escort mission, Ferren's convoy is attacked and his right arm ripped off by a ferocious monster.

By some miracle, Ferren survives the ordeal and is sent back home, at the borderlands, to nurse his wounds. Worry begins to settle in, especially with the way his missing limb starts itching and burning.

Soon, he is shocked to find dark purple scales growing on his skin, and his stump getting bigger by the day. In a matter of a few weeks, a new arm has regrown. Looks like, somehow, he inherited some of the powers from the Beast he encountered, and he can now change his arm into any tool or weapon he's familiar with. Not only that, he will learn he can also gain new abilities and forms for his arm by killing more monsters.

Ferren will use his newfound skills to help with the family farm, but also to protect them and the people living nearby as the waves of attacks increase. But will that be enough?

It might not be for everyone, but it’s a fun, episodic book.
The desert Fantasy vibe is really unique and I love the world it’s set in and the Everyman protagonist. There is no character I dislike.

I literally stayed up all night to listen to this

This book baffled me a bit. I originally got it because I am a fan of Roger Clark, the narator ( who is doing a great job as usual). I thought it would be a lighthearted fantasy romp, or a young adult novel. Well it is neither but it HAS elements of both. The story is very straight forward. Just one POV. You look over the shoulder of the protagonist, watch him win his victories, he evolves, quite literally, and then the book is over and I am glad that there is already a second book. The book suprised me by its visceral fighting scenes, which are not for the faint of heart. There are secrets and mysteries to explore.... some of which should have been adressed more in this book, I think. There is the foundation of a buddy storie in it. The slightest hint of future romance and a heavy dose of family holding together. All in a not annoying way. I enjoyed it a lot.

Interesting one
