I would like to say a few things about my first husband, William. 

Lucy Barton is a writer, but her ex-husband, William, remains a hard man to read. William, she confesses, has always been a mystery to me. Another mystery is why the two have remained connected after all these years. They just are.

I listen to books while cleaning the house, and I loved this one. Time flew although the pace is rather slow. And the ending is brillant. I'm glad that I've read it...

A very wise book.

Das Buch erzählt die Geschichte einer Frau, die mit Ihrem Ex Mann in dessen Vergangenheit reist, um eine unklare Familiengeschichte aufzuarbeiten. Mir waren die Motive und Ängste Williams nicht plausibel, auch die Erzählerin hat ständig Angst vor allem. Mir scheint ihre immer noch bestehende Bewunderung und Devotion für William völlig unangebracht, da aus der Erzählung ersichtlich wird, dass er kein besonders treuer oder zugewandter Mensch und Ehemann war und narzißtische Züge aufweist. Die Erzählerin ist die perfekte Konarzißtin, die all seine Bedürfnisse bedient. Das war schwer zu ertragen. Auch die extrem schlichte und nicht besonders abwechslungsreiche Sprache hat mich mächtig genervt.
