Contrary to popular perception in the West, Islam is a religion firmly rooted in the prophetic traditions of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. Aslan begins with a vivid account of the social and religious milieu in which the Prophet Muhammad lived. The revelations that Muhammad received in Mecca and Medina, which were recorded in the Quran, became the foundation for a radically more egalitarian community, the likes of which had never been seen before.
According to Reza Aslan, we are now living in the era of "the Islamic Reformation". No god but God is a persuasive and elegantly written account of the roots of this reformation and the future of Islamic faith.

excellent book
Mr. Anlan writes comprehensively about the history of Islam.
It is well written and easy to follow his explanations in this book.
The best history book about Islam I've come across so far.
The reader was flawless and pleasing to listen to.
My recommendation to those who are interested.

Great journey!
Reza Aslan for me represents all hopes for a future union of the monotheistic cultures of Europe and the Near and Middle East.
There is a voice of reason and love in him that reaches straight through all of our dreams of past and future centuries, recollecting all we recognize as magical, mystical, just, fascinating, unifying forces in our common narratives is meticulously researched by this author, then edited and put into an overall sociopolitical context so that the quintessential message of his work enlightens the heart and inspires the mind.
I had the very same experience with his work "Zelot" on Jesus of Nazareth.
What runs through Aslans work, here beautifully read by Shishir Kurup, is the same red thread that also serves as a moral guideline in Elaine Pagel's "Gnostic Gospels", Ki Longfellow's "The Secret Magdalene" and Aldous Huxley's "Perennial Philosophy": the belief in one singular spiritual source as origin of all.
If you like that idea, you will indulge in this audio book as if it were an unexpected holiday by the sea.

Very informative
I am not a Muslim and didn‘t know too much about Islam. I knew terms such a Sunit, Shiit, Taliban, Wahabism, Islamic State, but I haf no idea of how they match together and how they evolved.
This book gave me many answers and background information and I enjoyed listenig to it a lot- although it was sometimes necessary to remotivate myself to finish the audiobook.
The first 60-70% of the book were very historic and only in the last third it actually dealt intensively with the questions I was looking answers for, focusing on the last three centuries.
But thanks a lot to the author for having written this outstanding oevre.

Everyone should learn the history of Islam
good overview of the roots of Islam some 1400 years ago till today. Reza is idealizing a bit the ways of the profit, which is okay. the rest of the history is more balanced, as much as one could be. highly recommend to listen with open mind and intent
