amazing second chance love story woven into a superb mystery.
The story follows deputy Shane Carson and Texas Ranger Dakota Jennings, who were secretly together in high school, broke up and now have to solve 6 murders together.
Tal paints a beautiful picture of everything with his words. I’ve never been to Texas but I could feel the earth beneath my feet, the sun and wind on my face while being surrounded by Ocotillo and Mesquite.
I felt that this book had a different structure than usual. The first half focused almost solely on Dakota and Shane’s reunion and love for each other.
The second half focused on the investigation. And the mystery was as gripping as ever! I got sucked right in and tried to solve their case along with them.
I was captivated from the first page and couldn’t put it down. I just HAD to know what happened between Shane and Dakota! And I had to see how they solved the mystery and who was behind these gruesome murders.
Shane and Dakota are amazing and lovable characters. Both are strong and complex but hurt and lonely. And they are unbelievably cute together!
I was fully invested in those two after the “reunion”.
We get some flashbacks thrown in here and there of their time together and those make a nail biting buildup to finally finding out what happened between them all those years ago.
My heart literally hurt while reading about their past. Poor Dakota. He now is one of my favorite book boyfriends. He is just swoon worthy.
“Let me love you, Shane, all the ways I can. Big, small, and everything in between.”
“Every beat of my heart is yours.”
From the beginning to the end this is an emotional whirlwind.
I got teary eyed. Angry.
I hurt. I swooned.
I was heartbroken.
And so so happy at the end of this story.
(And turned on. Seriously, this book has some of the hottest scenes Tal Bauer has ever written)
Absolutely recommend this for everyone who loves suspense, mystery, second chance and law enforcement!
The narration: as always John Solo did an excellent job. Although at times it’s really fast, he sometimes has a way of narrating that’s almost melodic.
Personally, Dakota’s “voice” wasn’t really my thing, but that’s just my personal issue and only a teeny tiny one if that.
