Ich kenne Julia Whelan vor allem als herausragende Hörbuchsprecherin – ihre Stimme verleiht unzähligen Figuren Leben, mit einer Feinfühligkeit und Ausdruckskraft, die ihresgleichen sucht. Umso neugieriger war ich auf My Oxford Year, ihr Debüt als Autorin. Und was soll ich sagen? Sie ist nicht nur eine brillante Sprecherin, sondern auch eine fantastische Erzählerin.
Die Geschichte ist viel mehr als eine klassische Liebesgeschichte – sie ist klug, tiefgründig, berührend und poetisch. Die Charaktere sind lebendig, vielschichtig und glaubwürdig. Julia Whelan gelingt es, große Gefühle zu vermitteln, ohne in Kitsch oder Klischees zu verfallen. Stattdessen schenkt sie uns eine Erzählung voller Nuancen, mit wunderschöner Sprache und echtem emotionalem Gewicht. Wärmste Empfehlung für alle, die Geschichten mit Herz und Verstand lieben.

an all around beautiful novel. Julia Whelan creates such wonderful characters, believable and multidimensional. the bantering, the struggles, the sorrow, the joy ... it's all there, and I felt it all.

Ich hatte etwas anderes erwartet. Leichteres. Aber ich möchte nicht zu viel verraten. Die Sprecherin, die auch dieses Buch geschrieben hat, ist grandios! Sie erweckt sämtliche Charaktere zum Leben mit ihrer wandelbaren Stimme. Ich hätte am liebsten immer weiter gehört!

Geschichte mit unerwarteter Wendung, grandios gelesen

The storylines are over the top and instead of exploring one thoroughly, it seems that Julia Whelan is so eager to display her own take of several seen-before tropes, she mashes them all together, causing them the fall short and lack in creating actual suspense. It even seems she introduces a trope (the attraction? The friends? Friends with benefits catch feelings? The cancer…) and then sort of gets sick of it and doesn’t really illustrate the development, actually not even the key moments and just grazes over them lazily and tells us in retrotrospect that they happened btw. Like what?! And then skips to the next topic.
Also, Ella fails to be relatable (it’s not enough to mention the background in the same way multiple times), and is so utterly and stereotypically AMERICAN, it could have been clever if she didn’t take herself so seriously.

And while we can usually rely on her reading performance to please us no matter the plot, the fake British accents… well they are British so what is she supposed to do… but they are what they are so cringeworthy you want to stop listening within the first chapters.
Just no.
