A masterpiece
One of the best Crime stories in my opinion. There is a reason it is this famous. If you like crime novels, you cannot go wrong with this one.

Brilliant story, brilliantly spoken
One of the most fun books I've heard in a while. The story is interesting in its entirety - at no point did I feel like "get on with this conversation" or "this is repetitive". All the characters, and there are quite a few witnesses to keep track of, have interesting backstory that gets explored during the course of the book. This combined with the brilliant narration - mood, accents, humor are all conveyed very well - really makes for an audiobook that was through-and-through fun to listen to. David Suchet even manages to narrate the few pieces of French language littered throughout the book, making for a smooth listening experience. I never felt the voices he gave the different people were out-of-character in any form.
I don't know if I will listen to this book again. A big part of the story is that you build your own image of the crime and attempt to piece together the clues yourself which of course isn't half as fun when you already know the answer. On the other hand, just the little bits of humor that appear in the entire book fairly consistently and the great character building might have me coming back to listen to a few scenes again. Especially the different kinds of prejudices the detective and his two "companions" during the investigation really make me grin sometimes.
As you can see, I'm gushing. I just listened to the last two hours of the book in one go because I could not wait for the answer to the puzzle, and the ending is absolutely brilliant, one of the best I've ever read (or, well, heard). This book is amazing, I love it, and the beautiful narration is the cherry on top. I wish I could listen to it again for the first time.
