 Sindiwe Magona's novel Mother to Mother explores the South African legacy of apartheid through the lens of a woman who remembers a life marked by oppression and injustice. Magona decided to write this novel when she discovered that Fulbright Scholar Amy Biehl, who had been killed while working to organize the nation's first ever democratic elections in 1993, died just a few yards away from her own permanent residence in Guguletu, Capetown. She then learned that one of the boys held responsible for the killing was in fact her neighbor's son. Magona began to imagine how easily it might have been her own son caught up in the wave of violence that day. The book is based on this real-life incident, and takes the form of an epistle to Amy Biehl's mother. The murderer's mother, Mandisi, writes about her life, the life of her child, and the colonized society that not only allowed, but perpetuated violence against women and impoverished black South Africans under the reign of apartheid. Only finished this book because I'm obliged to teach this for the German Abitur. The soundfile took me through this while I read along in the printed version. The horror. How on earth am I going to make this tremedously dull book interesing for the students? How can someone use to many words to say so little? Don't get me wrong - I think the issue addressed is important to face, but this book is just horrible.
The reader did a good job, though. I would have had difficulties with the pronunciation of some of the Xhosa words.

So boring...

This was truly an experience, I don’t want to repeat. 8 1/2 hours of boredom. I can’t for the life of me, bring myself to say even one positive word about this book. Why? Why waste all this time to so many empty words? When there is so much happiness and wonder in the world to enjoy.

Ich musste dieses Buch als Pflichtlektüre lesen. Jedem der es nicht lesen muss würde ich strengstens davon abraten. Die Protagonist ist unglaublich unsympathisch und selbstbezogen. Schon auf den ersten Seiten wird deutlich, dass sie keine Empathie empfinden kann. Im weiteren Verlauf zieht sie ihre Biographie in die Länge um Hintergrunde/Rechtfertigen für die Geschichte zu liefern. Das Buch ist gefüllt mit einer Vielzahl an unnötigen information.

Insgesamt fühlte sich das Lesen/Hören so an als würde ich einem schmerzhaft langen Monolog einer Narzistin zuhören ohne entkommen zu können. Ich hoffe dieses Leid bleibt zukünftigen Jahrgängen erspart.

Solltet ihr dennoch damit bestraft werden euch mit diesem Buch zu befassen. Lest die Zusammenfassungen und nicht das Buch. Die wichtigen Informationen die darin enthalten sind hätte man auch auf 10 Seiten bekommen.
