    Inhaltsangabe

When a petty thief falls though a glass roof in his attempt to escape from the police, what should have been the death of him marks the beginning of a while new life. After his broken body is reconstructed by an ambitious young doctor, he is released from prison, and, with the help of Victorian London's extensive sewer system, he becomes the most elusive burglar in the city. He adopts a dual existence as a respectable, wealthy gentleman named Montmorency, and his degenerate servant Scarper. But Montmorency must always be on guard. The smallest mistake could reveal his secret and ruin both his lives.

Eleanor Updale's writing is witty and wholly original. With a unique perspective and a voice reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe, Montmorency is a cleverly told, gripping adventure story.

    Kritikerstimmen

"Montmorency's heart-pounding brushes with discovery add a palpable layer of suspense." ( Booklist)
"Readers will find themselves drawn not only to Montmorency's compellingly bizarre biography, but also to his clever and mischievous nature that eventually leads him to both a realization of his past wrongs and a valid career where he can put his "best" skills to good use." ( School Library Journal)

    what a treat

Well, to start with, I selected this book mainly for the reader, as I am a huge fan of Stephen Fry's, and did not know anything about the autor, or the book. I thoroughly enjoyed myself as I found the storyline original, witty, interesting, even educational and entertaining at the same time. It did not feel like a children's book to me at all. Stephen Fry did a great job in reading it. I finished this one in record time as I did not want to put this audio book down. I can wholeheartedly recommend this for an easy and diverting reading/listening experience!

What a rare treat - exquisit

Ok, I admit it, I love Stephen Fry‘s way of bringing storys to life. He could probably read the NY telephone directory and it would be exciting. However, the story is beautifully written, the slow transformation process from victim via moderate avenger to self determined gentleman, some lucky fairydust sprinkled in. One cnnot but like Scarper/Montmorency. Modest yet ambitious; selfish but never mean; and at last contented and kindhearted. Stephen Fry adds depth and individuality to each character. I just ordered the next volume, not available as audiobook (yet), I am sure I will hear the character‘s voices in my mind while reading
