It begun as a sudden strange fancy...Polly Perks had to become a boy in a hurry. Cutting off her hair and wearing trousers was easy. Learning to fart and belch in public and walk like an ape took more time. And now she's enlisted in the army and searching for her lost brother.
But there's a war on. There's always a war on. And Polly and her fellow recruits are suddenly in the thick of it, without any training, and the enemy is hunting them. All they have on their side is the most artful sergeant in the army and a vampire with a lust for coffee. Well...they also have the Secret. And as they take the war to the heart of the enemy, they have to use all the resources of...the Monstrous Regiment.

To the consternation of the patrician, Lord Vetinari, a new invention has arrived in Ankh-Morpork - a great clanging monster of a machine that harnesses the power of all of the elements: earth, air, fire and water. This being Ankh-Morpork, it’s soon drawing astonished crowds, some of whom caught the zeitgeist early and arrive armed with notepads and very sensible rainwear.

It's an offer you can't refuse. Who would not wish to be the man in charge of Ankh-Morpork's Royal Mint and the bank next door? It's a job for life. But, as former con-man Moist von Lipwig is learning, the life is not necessarily for long. The Chief Cashier is almost certainly a vampire. There's something nameless in the cellar (and the cellar itself is pretty nameless), and it turns out that the Royal Mintruns at a loss.

Geschichte
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse. And Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on holiday in the pleasant and innocent countryside, but not for him a mere body in the wardrobe. There are many, many bodies and an ancient crime more terrible than murder. He is out of his jurisdiction, out of his depth, out of bacon sandwiches and occasionally snookered and out of his mind, but never out of guile. They say that in the end all sins are forgiven.

Laugh out loud funny
I’ve read this book before and it’s a Pratchett so I know it’s funny, but THIS happens to be one of his better stories and Mr Briggs has the art of comedy down to a pat. His voice/voices and accents are wonderful, his timing impeccable and his Englishness is soooo English.
Prepare to look mad as you laugh out loud.

Love it
I loved every bit of this audio book. Brigg's fast-paced style fits the military theme so well, though it could be hard for non-native speakers to keep up. And need I mention Pratchett's wonderful sense of humour? Certainly not the last time I've listened to this.

Among Disc Worlds best entries and relevant beyond
I would recommend this even to non-discoworld fans. It doesn't take great understanding of the Discworld to get into the story, and I would recommend this one to anyone (with a sense of humor).
There are some minor spoilers for earlier entries, such as the City Watch novels. But they don't relate to key plot elements of said books.
Despite the synopsis, this is not a Mulan parody.
Well, it does contain a girl wanting to become a soldier. And that in a setting that openly rejects the idea of people stepping outside of gender norms.
It involves socks.
The narration also makes sure to address characters as the way they are perceived given any situation. When the protagonist pretends to be "Oliver", the narration addresses him as such.
It makes for an interesting wordplay and remains consistent throughout the story, being important to the story too (with discworld novels being meta and such)
For Disc World fans, the story also focuses on the aftermath of other Discworld stories. Some recurring characters play minor roles in the story, and more is learned about e.g. Discworld Vampires.
Bless Terry Pratchett for this book.

Loved it so much! Just blown me away!
Würden Sie Monstrous Regiment noch mal anhören? Warum?
Just have listened to the end of Monstrous Regiment and wished the story wouldn't have ended already.
Welcher Moment von Monstrous Regiment ist Ihnen besonders im Gedächtnis geblieben?
I was so infected by Polly, Sergeant Jackrums "little lads" the great characters from human, to vampire to troll. The story and plott was just amazing!
Hat Ihnen Stephen Briggs an der Geschichte etwas vermittelt, was Sie vielleicht beim Selberlesen gar nicht bemerkt hätten?
Stephen Briggs told the story in a real enjoyable way!
Hätten Sie das Hörbuch am liebsten in einem Rutsch durchgehört?
Would have liked to hear it all in one go, timewise wasn't possible and like that I happy every day to hear the story evolve a little more!
Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?
Can recommend it to the fullest! Amazing!!!
